College Football Scores: Wisconsin Proves It Is Class of Big Ten
The Badgers made their first statement of the season when they thrashed Nebraska in the Cornhuskers' first Big Ten game. In Week 7, the Badgers took care of business by throttling the Indiana Hoosiers, 59-7, but they let the rest of the Big Ten teams destroy themselves.
No. 16 Illinois ruined another chance to take the program to the next level. They were upset by unranked Ohio State, 17-7 at home. That was a particularly damaging defeat and could really hurt the Fighting Illini's BCS Bowl game hopes.
In a battle of Wisconsin's most realistic conference title competition, the undefeated No. 11 Michigan Wolverines were defeated by rival No. 23 Michigan St. 28-14. The Wolverines were understandably overrated due to their undefeated record. They will undoubtedly fall out of the top 15 after this road loss.
Now, the Spartans are set up for their battle with the Badgers in Week 8. It is the last real chance for a Big Ten team to upend the Badgers before the inaugural Big Ten title game. The game is in East Lansing, but the Badgers are just too strong.
The Russell Wilson for Heisman outcry is getting louder and more passionate. The Badgers should sit tight at No. 4 in the nation, but as long as they are in the national championship picture, Wilson has a chance at the trophy.
The Badgers need some help and bad fortune from two of the top three teams, Alabama, Oklahoma or LSU to have a chance at the crystal football. I'm not sure the Big Ten has the talent to compete with the best of the SEC, but there is no doubt Wisconsin is the cream of the Midwestern crop.
