Report: Big East Invites Boise State and Others, but Should the Broncos Join?
If you ask any college football fan what is the weakest major conference in college football, chances are they will say the Big East. Even if they are a fan of West Virgina or South Florida.
The Big East has been weak for a long time as far as football is concerned and with Syracuse and Pittsburgh leaving for the ACC, it has gotten even weaker. Before this week, there were real concerns that the conference could fold as a whole leaving the teams to fend for themselves.
Lately the conference has been active in trying to bring teams in to not only save the conference but also increase it's chances of receiving an automatic bid to a BCS bowl.
The main team they are trying to bring over to increase the quality of the football played is Boise State. The Broncos are currently in the MWC and win double digit games almost every season. Lately they have been in the top five of every college poll and are always in the conversation for a National Championship.
Joining the Big East would give them the opportunity to receive an automatic bid to a BCS bowl and not have to scratch and crawl in the MWC like they're doing now.
But is joining the Big East really worth it?
The main complaint we have every season with Boise isn't whether they're a good team or not, we know they're good. But it's the lack of the competition they play. In the MWC they play teams like Colorado State, UNLV and New Mexico every year.
In the Big East they'd get to play teams like the Rutgers, Connecticut, and mighty Louisville. Sure, you have West Virginia and South Florida who cracks the top 25 every once in a while but it's really not that much different from the MWC as far as competition goes.
Did I mention that the Big East is looking to send invites to Air Force, Navy and possibly UCF as well? Those teams do have huge fan bases but from a competitive standpoint we'd still be asking the same questions about Boise every year.
Also, look at the way Syracuse and Pittsburgh just left the conference and we already know Connecticut was trying to join them. Who's to say West Virginia or Louisville won't try to do the same thing next season?
There's no point in leaving a conference you're in just to end up in a bad situation a year from now. You need some type of stability before you make the move.
Last time I checked Boise, Idaho is nowhere near the east at all. In fact it's over 2,000 miles away from Pittsburgh and over 2,500 away from Connecticut. Traveling for these teams would be like an NFL team on the east traveling to the west to play a game. And we all know how those games usually end up for the away team.
So, let's get this straight.
Boise State is considering leaving a conference for another conference thousands of miles away, to play to same sub-par competition that might not even be there next season.
There are positives and negatives to every situation but as of right now the Big East is looking a lot like the MWC with just a different name and address.
