College Football Rankings: Will a Florida Team Get Back in the Polls?

Eric BallOct 9, 2011

For the first time since Dec. 6, 1982, there is not a single team in the AP poll that resides in the state of Florida.

That's 472 weeks, if you're counting at home.

Saturday was just the second instance since Oct. 14, 1978, that Florida, Florida State and Miami lost on the same day. It also happened Oct. 30, 2004.

Florida, Florida State, Miami, South Florida—all of them are on the outside looking in.

With the brutal part of the SEC slate over, the Gators have a shot of climbing back into the Top 25, yet they have to beat an angry Auburn team on the road to get back in the rankings.

A loss would further push them out of the mix—possibly for good.

The Seminoles are 2-3 and searching for answers. Luckily for them, the ACC schedule lightens considerably with Duke and Maryland on tap. Considering the only hard games left on the schedule are against their Florida rivals, they have a shot. Then again, saddled with three losses this early in the year is going to get FSU out of the Top 25 for a long time. Another slip-up would keep them out for good.

The team in biggest trouble is Miami. It still has games against Georgia Tech, Florida State and South Florida on tap and seemingly finds a way to lose a winnable game almost every week. The defense isn't great and the passing game is less than stellar.

With all of the negative attention received at the beginning of the year, you knew things weren't going to end well in Coral Gables. They are playing for the right to go to a bowl game at this point.

The South Florida Bulls have the easiest road back to the polls. The beatdown given to them by Pittsburgh on national TV is still fresh in the mind of pollsters, which means they need to quietly go about their business over the next month. The slate includes three road games against UConn, Rutgers and Syracuse, with a home date against Cincinnati sandwiched in.

A clean sweep and the Bulls not only have the inside track to a huge matchup with West Virginia the last game of the year, but they'll also be ranked.

Mark this day down: On Oct. 9, 2011, the South Florida Bulls have the best shot of getting in the Top 25 of all the teams that reside in Florida.

Times are sure changing.
