Fantasy Football Week 5 Rankings: Jacoby Jones and 4 Riskiest WRs

John RozumOct 6, 2011

Each week in fantasy football, one of the areas that can give you can edge is having a deep receiving core.

Being able to count on at least two WRs per week saves a lot of your frustration for other things in fantasy football.

That being said, however, there are also risky plays even if you have some depth, because with No. 2 WRs and the flex position, matchups are everything.

So, here are Week 5's top four riskiest WR plays.

4. Mike Wallace, Steelers (vs Titans)

It's not so much that Mike Wallace can't rack up some solid points this week as it is that his opportunities will be limited.

Meaning, the Titans are going to run the ball a lot now that Chris Johnson is getting into a rhythm, and with RB Rashard Mendenhall not being 100 percent, Tennessee will put double coverage on Wallace more often than not to prevent the big play.

In addition, Tennessee has a top 10 defense, and they'll stop the run easily as well as get pressure on Big Ben all day.

3. Dwayne Bowe, Chiefs (at Colts)

Much like the Titans will do to Pittsburgh, the Indianapolis Colts are going to get some solid pressure on QB Matt Cassel.

Now include Kansas City's lack of rushing offense (especially compared to 2010), and they won't be able to set up the passing game very well.

In turn, WR Dwayne Bowe sees a lot of double coverage, but slot man Steve Breaston may earn more targets as he'll most likely see a soft zone or man-to-man.

With RB Jamaal Charles out, Bowe is the Chiefs' best weapon, so shutting him down is the key to blanking K.C.'s offense.

2. Mike Thomas, Jaguars (vs Bengals)

Even though Mike Thomas is dominating outside (20 receptions, 212 yards), he only has one TD, and much of his targets are because he is the Jags' lone receiving threat right now.

This week Jacksonville hosts the 2-2 Bengals, who also happen to have the No. 3 and No. 7 ranked pass and rush defense.

So, rookie QB Blaine Gabbert will have a tough time finding anyone open, and Thomas will be doubled on almost every play.

If he gets any looks, however, it'll most likely be on a bubble screen, quick screen or deep fade.

That still won't be enough for him to be nearly as productive as you need him to be.

1. Jacoby Jones, Texans (vs Raiders)

With star WR Andre Johnson out, fellow Texan WRs Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones will need to step up.

Unfortunately for Jones, Walter has much more experience and is flat out better and more reliable.

Also, TE Owen Daniels will most likely become QB Matt Schaub's favorite target as he was second in Houston with 14 catches, 23 targets and 182 yards.

Had Andre Johnson been healthy, Jones is the fourth-best target in Houston, but he's now only No. 3.

Both he and Walter will see a lot of single coverage, while Daniels gets doubled, so yes, Jones will get more targets.

However, it's not going to be enough to be a fantasy football starter, even at the No. 2/3 WR position as well as the flex.
