Week 5 Waiver Wire: Jason Campbell and 4 Best Bye-Week Subs

Andrea HangstOct 4, 2011

With six teams on their byes this week, it's time for fantasy GMs to start scouring the waiver wires for useful one-week fill-ins. Here, I will detail four players that add value to your team whenever it's time for you to make that inevitable replacement.

Oakland Raiders QB Jason Campbell (at Houston Texans)

Campbell has the benefit of a good stable of wide receivers available to make the big play. Though he throws a number of interceptions, as he gets more comfortable responding to pressure and limits his desperation plays, that number should go down.

Even against the stout Houston Texans defense this Sunday, Campbell's odds for success are high. The Raiders offensive line has been solid thus far, and the use of the running game should open up some passing options for the quarterback, as well as serve to shake off some of the inevitable pass-rush pressure.

Campbell is owned in just 21 percent of Yahoo! leagues, making him an available option should your starting quarterback be on a bye this week.

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (vs. Seattle Seahawks)

Originally an injury replacement for the concussed Mario Manningham, Cruz had significant opportunity to impress in Week 4 after Manningham was benched for bad play, and he did, with six receptions for 98 yards.

This week, the Giants host the Seattle Seahawks, a team in the middle of the pack in terms of defending receivers. He should see a good amount of playing time, and Rotowire even suggests that Cruz could could supplant Manningham as a starter should the latter be moved into a full-time slot position.

Through four games, Cruz has 11 receptions for 225 yards and two touchdowns, which is a good sign for his future production. Owned in 37 percent of Yahoo! leagues, not only is he a great waiver-wire pickup to replace a bye-week receiver, he'll also be useful to your roster for the rest of the season.

Detroit Lions WR Titus Young (vs. Chicago Bears)

While Young's catches were down in Week 4, he's quickly becoming a favorite of Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, gaining on Nate Burleson as the team's No. 2 wide receiver.

On the season, he's had 12 receptions for 181 yards, and this week his team hosts the Chicago Bears, with a defense that's been bad against the pass thus far.

While Young may be a better waiver-wire add for those in 14- or 16-team leagues, he still has value in more standard leagues. With a glut of good receivers on bye this week, there are worse choices you can make than adding Young for one game.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Hunter made a fantasy football name for himself after starting Niners running back Frank Gore injured his ankle in Week 3. Now, for the second week in a row, he's getting the official start over Gore, though that might be in name only.

In Week 4, he ran nine times for 38 yards and caught two passes for 62 more, making him a great bye-week start in PPR leagues. Though he saw fewer snaps than Gore against the Eagles in Week 4, his number of snaps and carries will go up against Tampa this week, and if he continues to impress could end up the undisputed starting back in a few weeks' time.

A good waiver-wire running back is hard to find, and it's likely that after this week, Hunter won't be available to you, because he's got more than just bye-week-replacement potential. Right now, he's owned in 29 percent of Yahoo! leagues; this is your chance to grab him while the getting's good.
