College Football Rankings Week 6: Nebraska and 3 Teams Destined to Drop

Josh MartinOct 2, 2011

The ebb and flow of winning and losing will leave plenty of teams reeling in the latest edition of the AP and the Coaches Polls. So many Top-25 teams were torn apart by disappointing losses this week, but these three in particular are bound to really take it on the chin when the new rankings hit the interwebs.

Nebraska

What's that? The Big 12 is looking for new members? Well, sign the Cornhuskers up!

Wait...you mean that wouldn't work so well? Looks like Nebraska may be stuck in a rut for a while then. You'd think Big Red would be able to keep up in the Big Ten, especially with a team like Wisconsin, what with both teams being so run-oriented and preferring smash-mouth football and all.

Then the Badgers busted out an offensive line bulkier than that of the Green Bay Packers and Heisman Trophy contenders at quarterback (Russell Wilson) and running back (Montee Ball) to operate behind that great wall of humanity.

The only thing redder than all the students at Camp Randall Stadium or the uniforms of both teams competing on the field were the rear ends of the Huskers players after getting whipped around by 'Sconsin, 48-17. They'll find life against Ohio State a bit easier, though the Buckeyes will put up a fight with Dan Herron, DeVier Posey and Mike Adams coming off suspension.

South Carolina

Ah yes, the Gamecocks. Auburn arrived in Columbia just in time to crush South Carolina's hopes of competing for the BCS National Championship. The "Cock 'n' Fire" offense, once the only reliable part of 'SC's repertoire, shot nothing but blanks against the Tigers defense. The only thing worse that Stephen Garcia stinking up the joint (9-of-23 for 160 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions) was the fact that every moment of his ineptitude meant fewer opportunities for Marcus Lattimore.

The Gamecocks are still firmly in the hunt for the SEC East, but Steve Spurrier has to figure out his quarterback situation and get his team back on the straight and narrow before it gets eaten by alive by this whole durn human comedy of errors and mediocrity.

Luckily, South Carolina doesn't have to play Alabama or LSU, but even that fact might not be enough to keep the Gamecocks from misfiring along what was supposed to big their most triumphant march under the Ol' Ball Coach.

Baylor

Oh, Baylor! You shocked the college football world with a season-opening win over a ranked TCU team. Your quarterback, Robert Griffin III, came out of nowhere like a bat out of Cam Newton, setting the country ablaze with more touchdowns than incomplete passes.

Then you took your act to Manhattan, Kansas, and even that proved too much for your woeful defense. One mistake—an interception by RG3 in the fourth quarter—and you were dead in the water.

Will good tidings ever come to Waco and stay there? Will Kenneth Starr, not Art Briles, forever be the face of the school?

Okay, so maybe the situation isn't quite so dire for the Bears, but they couldn't have hoped for a much better situation with which to open up Big 12 conference play. Now they delve into the meat of their league schedule, against teams that can really put up points and throw their defense into a tizzy. Good luck containing the James Franklins, Seth Doeges, Landry Joneses, Brandon Weedens and Ryan Tannehills of the Midwest.

Even former President George W. Bush, with his ranch in nearby Crawford, will be left shaking his head, wondering where it all went so very, very wrong.
