College Football Rankings 2011: Michigan and 3 Teams That Will Rise Up Top 25
Five weeks of the college football season are officially in the books, and we now have a good gauge on where most teams stand in the national landscape. Many teams made big-time statements this week, though and will likely be rewarded in the polls.
A number of Top 25 teams tasted defeat, so there is plenty of room for advancement for teams in the middle or lower portions of the rankings. Here are three teams who are sure to rise up the rankings after impressive wins on Saturday.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Sporting the best scoring offense and second-best rushing offense in the nation this season, the No. 21 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have proven that they are for real. Georgia Tech bolstered its already impressive resume by defeating North Carolina State 45-35 on Saturday.
At 5-0, the Yellow Jackets are among the ACC's best and have a fairly easy schedule over the next few weeks. Neither Maryland nor Virginia should pose much of a problem, and Miami has played poorly recently as well.
Georgia Tech will certainly move up a few spots in the rankings this week and should continue to do so over the next month provided Orwin Smith, David Sims and Synjyn Days continue to run the ball with such incredible effectiveness.
Clemson Tigers
They may not have received much hype entering the 2011 season, but after whooping the No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies 23-3 on Saturday, the No. 13 Clemson Tigers have a firm grasp on the ACC. That win should certainly catapult Clemson into the top 10.
The Tigers have beaten ranked teams in three consecutive weeks in Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech, so it's safe to say that they're for real. Quarterback Tajh Boyd has been the catalyst as his 1,459 yards and 14:2 touchdowns to interceptions ratio makes him a legitimate Heisman contender.
Clemson could very well go as high as No. 7 or No. 8 in the nation by virtue of its latest victory and should only continue to rise with the most difficult part of the schedule out of the way. An Oct. 29 battle with Georgia Tech could loom large in terms of BCS implications.
Michigan Wolverines
After a couple disappointing seasons under former head coach Rich Rodriguez, hopes weren't particularly high for the No. 19 Michigan Wolverines entering 2011. New head coach Brady Hoke has breathed new life into the program, however, as the Wolverines have gotten off to a 5-0 start.
The Wolverines throttled Big 10 rival Minnesota 58-0 on Saturday and just continue to get better with each passing week. Quarterback Denard Robinson is once again among the nation's most dynamic players as he has the ability to beat teams with his arm as well as his legs.
Perhaps the most important factor in Michigan's renaissance has been defense, though. The Wolverines were among the weakest defensive teams in the nation last season, but Hoke's new commitment to defense has been apparent as the Wolverines rank an impressive 11th in the nation in scoring defense.
