Ozzie Guillen to the Florida Marlins: 5 Reasons Why They're a Perfect Match

Rob ManiseroSep 27, 2011

After what seems like years of uncertainty over the status of their manager, the Chicago White Sox have released Ozzie Guillen from his contract.

Actually, they sorta traded him.

According to ESPN, Guillen is about to sign a four-year deal with the Florida Marlins, and in exchange, the Chi-Sox will receive two minor leaguers. It's a little odd to see what is basically a manager-player exchange, but I believe adding Guillen to that ballclub will help propel the Fish in the right direction next year.

Here are my five reasons why.

5. Get Manager Stability Back

1 of 5

Fredi Gonzalez managed the team for a little over three years, but he was gone during the 2010 season. His job was taken over by Edwin Rodriguez, but he only made it a couple of months into the current season. When the Marlins couldn't fight out of their big time losing streak, changes once again needed to be made.

In an attempt to get things back to normal, Jack McKeon was brought back in to try and settle things down. However, it was generally understood that McKeon was not the manager of the future; therefore, the concept of bringing him in to stabilize the managerial position seemed a bit pointless.

It is reported that Ozzie is coming in for a four-year contract. Hopefully, him and management are on good terms and he can stick around the team for the foreseeable future.

4. Ozzie Equals Press

How much do you usually hear about the Florida Marlins? Not much at all. They're not exactly a hot topic for the media, even if the team is in the race for the playoffs. The Marlins are an organization that can gain a huge benefit from increased exposure. Lately, they have been largely overshadowed by the other team to take residence in Florida.

A disturbing trend occurs with the Marlins, more so than any other team in baseball. They build a winning team, get to the World Series and win everything, but the fun only lasts for a year because of the lack of payroll. Increases in media and advertisement deals would go a long way towards sustainable growth in the organization.

Ozzie Guillen will find his way on TV day in and day out, and as long as he isn't bashing his own team in, it is nothing but positive news for the Marlins.

3. Experience

Ozzie has already been a part of the coaching staff in Florida, as you can see in this very endearing picture of him. Ironically, he was part of the 2003 coaching staff that was managed by Jack McKeon, the same man he will be replacing.

That 2003 team was able to beat the New York Yankees in the World Series, but of course suffered from payroll limitations the following winter.

On top of that, Ozzie led his 2005 White Sox to a World title, so he obviously has the playoff experience necessary to fill the requirements. He has the knowledge and expertise to guide a young team through the rough days of August and September in the hopes that the Marlins can earn a surprise playoff spot in 2012.

However, 2013 may be a more realistic estimate.

2. Charisma and Energy

Jack McKeon is a good manager, but he doesn't exactly look like a man that can provide a spark when needed. Maybe it's because he may have born in the Mesozoic Era. Ozzie can light a fire on that team that seems to be lacking ever since their massive losing streak earlier on in the season.

Guillen is going to bring a dominating personality to a clubhouse with plenty of rookies and young talent. Most importantly, he'll give it to his players straight, either when they succeed or make a mistake. Ozzie won't hold back, but his charisma will drive the team.

The energy he will display from the dugout should be incentive enough for the Marlins to try and put a winning season together.

1. New Stadium

The Marlins are finally moving out of the dreadful Sun Life Stadium in lieu of a luxurious new ballpark. Just west of downtown Miami, the new stadium will feature a swimming pool, an aquatic home plate backstop and a retractable roof.

What better way to get more recognition for your stadium than by bringing Ozzie Guillen in to help spread the word?

One thing is consistent throughout this slideshow and his career: Ozzie will comment, no matter what the situation. So it's a given that he will sell this beautiful new stadium to its fullest potential. Hopefully, this will spur attendance in the Miami area and give the Marlins actual crowds to play for.

Most years, the Florida Marlins have the best young talent in the league. Unfortunately, they usually do not get enough recognition because of their residence and their small market. The entrance of Ozzie coinciding with the opening of a new stadium should be a huge boost to the organization and will give them plenty of hope for the future.
