Aaron Curry Trade Rumors: Dealing Curry the Right Move for Seahawks

Zachary D. RymerSep 26, 2011

When the Seattle Seahawks came to the conclusion to draft Aaron Curry with the fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft, they were clearly hoping for a long and fruitful relationship.

Instead, Curry may not make it two years in Seattle. The word around the campfire is that he is on the trading block, and that there are already several interested parties.

The source of this rumor is a fellow named Rich Smith, who has been tweeting continuously about Curry's status throughout the bulk of the afternoon. One of the more recent updates has the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs all contacting the Seahawks about Curry. Another recent update claims the Seahawks are looking for a third-round pick in exchange for Curry.

Personally, I'm inclined to take these rumors with a grain of salt, as I'm just not 100 percent certain of their credibility.

That being said, it certainly makes sense for the Seahawks to put Curry out on the block at this juncture. They've already shortened his contract, and they benched him in favor of rookie K.J. Wright ahead of Sunday's win against the Arizona Cardinals. The next move is to get rid of him.

The writing on the wall pretty clearly says that the Seahawks have run out of patience with Curry. With Wright in the starting lineup, the only reason to keep Curry around would be for depth purposes.

Don't get me wrong, that wouldn't be the worst idea in the world for the Seahawks, as you just never know if and when you're going to need an able-bodied replacement player in the event of an injury. Curry may not be a star (much to Seattle's chagrin), but he is at least capable of holding his own.

But getting a draft pick for Curry is the better option. The Seahawks are a team that needs to rebuild, and acquiring an extra draft pick can only help in that regard. They're not going to get a high draft pick for Curry, mind you, but the Seahawks are clearly willing to take their chances.

If the Seahawks are making a mistake here, it's that they waited until after benching Curry to try to trade him. They might have been able to get a third-round pick for him had they been able to shop him as a starter, but now it's obvious that Curry is an extraneous piece to the puzzle that they are simply looking to unload.

For now, the situation is still developing. Just because it makes sense for the Seahawks to trade Curry doesn't necessarily mean that they will. Stay tuned for updates.
