Arsenal News: Backing Arsene Wenger Is Gunners' Only Option

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

For 15 years Arsene Wenger has manned the bench for Arsenal in North London.

This campaign just happens to be the worst start the club has had in 58 years.

In five Premier League matches the Gunners are 1-1-3 with a minus-eight goal differential and currently sit 17th in the English table.

While rivals Manchester United, City and Chelsea sit comfortable up top (Chelsea shouldn't be comfortable though) the Gunners are hanging out at the bottom with the likes of Fulham, Bolton and West Brom.

Even new boys Queens Park Rangers and Swansea City are off to better starts than the club in North London.

So, it goes without saying that Wenger is under extreme pressure as things sit now. It all started this summer with the transfer window fiasco that caused Wenger to spend haphazardly on deadline day.

The French manager did manage to land some talented players, but this club's morale, health and overall focus were in danger before the season began.

They did manage to win both legs of their UEFA Champions League playoff against Udinese and tied Borussia Dortmund in the opening match of Group play.

But, as important as it is to compete for trophies in Europe, everything starts at home in England.

Fans have grown tired and weary of the dismal start and Wenger is feeling pressure from almost all sides.

Ultimately his fate rests with Arsenal's bigger bosses, and chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, has given Wenger his full support despite stating there are "issues" the two need to discuss.

Mirror Football quotes the executive as saying:

"

"There is absolutely no issue about Arsene leaving the club or the club pushing him out. We just have some issues we need to address.

"[Sacking him] is a route we are not going to go down. He is not broken. He did not suddenly become a bad manager or somebody who became out of touch with the game. It is complete nonsense."

"

Nonsense it may be, but the Gunners need to do something to salvage their season.

There is no better option than holding onto Wenger though. He's helped build this club into a perennial contender, and they will continue to focus on youthful additions to the side in effort to compete with the best England has.

The model, which has been so expertly put to use by Manchester United, will eventually pay dividends. Liverpool is hoping to follow the same route and Arsenal will continue to play the market as they always have (with this past transfer window as an exception of course).

They'll need Wenger to complete that process, and right now the club is just experiencing a bit of turnover that they can still fix come January's transfer window.

For now, the club is wise to back their long-time manager because they don't have a better alternative.
