Gian Piero Gasperini: Tenure as Inter Milan Manager Among Shortest in History

Tim DanielsSep 21, 2011

Gian Piero Gasperini has been fired from his post as Internazionale manager, according to Goal.com. The 53-year-old manager held the job for less than three months and was unable to pick up a victory in five games, including an embarrassing 3-1 defeat against Novara on Tuesday.

Gasperini was hired in June after the departure of Leonardo. He was the third manager of the squad since the start of the 2010 season as the team has continued to struggle to fill the void left by Roberto Mancini and Jose Mourinho, who was allowed to leave for Real Madrid.

The team released a statement about the move.

'Inter want to communicate that the first-team training at Appiano Gentile this morning was taken over by Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi,' a statement on the club's official website reads.

'The club wants to thank Gian Piero Gasperini for his efforts.'

Inter Milan didn't have much choice but to head in another direction after poor starts in both league play and the Champions League group stage. A home loss to Trabzonspor puts the team in a precarious position moving forward as they attempt to advance to the knockout stages.

Gasperini becomes just the fourth manager in team history to hold the position for less than a year, joining Leonardo, Rafael Benitez and Giampiero Marini.

The firing does bring back memories of past short managerial tenures in football history.

Probably the most famous firing was that of Leroy Rosenior, who received word during his introductory press conference with Torquay United that he was not going to keep the job. A new ownership group purchased the team and told Rosenior they were going to bring in a different manager (Paul Buckle).

Luigi Delneri signed on with Portuguese side Porto during the summer of 2004, but didn't even make it to the team's first regular season game before he was released. The team didn't feel Delneri's heart was in the job after he made comments about returning to Italy for personal reasons.

One other famous story is that of Brian Clough.

Clough was let go after less than two months (44 days) on the job with Leeds United. The English manager led the team to just four points in six games and caused a divide in the locker room among the team's main contributors.

He was paid £98,000 to get lost.

Gasperini held his job for a slightly longer period of 90 days. The top teams in the world no longer have the patience to let a manager prove himself—you either produce or you're gone. The veteran manager learned that the hard way.

And now his story will be discussed every time a coach gets the quick hook.
