Santonio Holmes Injury: Should You Start Jets WR in Fantasy Football Week 2?

Andrew GardaMay 31, 2018

The New York Jets pulled a huge comeback win over the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday night, but it was not without some cost.

Receiver Santonio Holmes emerged from the game with injuries to his knee and quadriceps and has been questionable all week.

Holmes told Jason LaCanfora that he's going to play. The question is, how much and how will this affect the Jets' passing offense.

The Jets came out throwing last week and didn't let up during the game and Holmes was a huge piece of it. They face a great match-up with the Jacksonville Jaguars arriving in New Jersey for today's game.

Holmes could be a bit shaky to start because if he tweaks his quad or knee again, you may see him leave after a short time.

However, the rest of the receivers are good plays this week whether Holmes is in or not.

First of all, while the Jaguars' pass D helped eek out a win, they still allowed 249 yards and two TDs to Matt Hasselbeck, who didn't exactly look like Tom Brady last week or all of the 2010 season.

They did generate one interception but they couldn't stop Hasselbeck from reaching his receivers.

So the Jets shouldn't have a problem throwing against this defense.

The receivers themselves are good plays depending on what you need out of them.

Plaxico Burress is still shaking off the rust, but towards the end of last week's game he started to look like his old self. As long as he stays healthy—and avoids firearms in his pants—Burress is a great red zone target and can get both yards and touchdowns. I think he could approach 100 yards this week and he's a good bet for a touchdown as well.

Derrick Mason looked his age last week, but he has sure hands and once quarterback Mark Sanchez gets the measure of him, should be productive. He's a move-the-chains- kind of guy and that's likely how they will use him today. As a fourth wide receiver or a flex player—especially in a point per reception league—Mason is a decent play. He's not likely to explode whether Holmes is there or not, but he should be reliable. Mason should be good for five or so catches and 50 yards. He'll get red zone targets but I'm not sold on him for a touchdown.

While rookie Jeremy Kerley was relegated to kick returns, if Holmes is out, he should be more involved. It's likely that not only would he see some targets as the third Jets wideout, but I wouldn't be shocked to see the Jets roll out their new Wildcat this week so you could see some other fantasy points. However, I wouldn't start him as more than a flex or WR4 and if Holmes is playing, I'd avoid him.

Patrick Turner was activated this week in case Holmes can't go. The Jets aren't going to use him that much whether Holmes is there or not, so it's not really worth starting him. There are too many folks between him and opportunity.

It's a good week to start your Jets wide receivers. They should have a very solid game against the Jaguars.
