Peyton Manning: Latest Update on Health of Colts' Superstar

Wes ODonnellSep 8, 2011

Peyton Manning will not be playing football this weekend for the Indianapolis Colts.

As to when he will be back is anyone's guess.

The doctors, Colts and Peyton himself have given no time line for quarterback's return. All we know is that he won't be in the lineup against the Houston Texans this Sunday.

The last bit of information we received on his recovery status indicated that his arm wasn't strong enough to play a game of football.

Peyton also had soreness in his back and was consequently told to stop practicing earlier this week.

Rumors began circulating that Manning had a second surgery, but Colts owner Jim Irsay debunked that with this tweet:

"Peyton didn't have a medical procedure last sunday,we'll have more info 2 add clarity 2 situation soon"

A very active tweeter, Irsay didn't stop there. In fact, he's the source of the latest information regarding Peyton's status. The owner today tweeted

"

NFL Season opens 2nite!We had a good practice yesterday and r guys r fired up 4 the season.#18's out for awhile, but compete,we will/BELIEVE

"

A while could mean a great many things, especially coming from Irsay, but it is all we have to go on

And "out for awhile" has already done the job. People have started speculating that Peyton could be out a great number of weeks or possibly even miss the entire year. Although it is highly unlikely, it is a possibility.

With Peyton set to end his consecutive starts streak there is less pressure to rush back onto the field. He will be fully healthy before he returns.

There is, however, no denying how great a loss he is for the Colts. No team is more dependent on a single player.

He not only gives this team a chance to win; he is truly their only chance to win.

Kerry Collins will be thrust into the fire in his stead this weekend. He lines up behind a revamped offensive line that expects to start rookie first round pick, Anthony Castonzo, at left tackle.

The Houston Texans have a new defensive coordinator, a number of new defensive players and will pose a great threat to the Colts in Week 1.

Indianapolis' schedule doesn't get any easier either. The upstart Cleveland Browns visit in Week 2 before the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town in Week 3.

We don't know much, but we do know that "awhile" cannot come soon enough.
