WWE News: CM Punk, Roddy Piper and 24 More Pro Wrestling Dream Teams
Tag team wrestling seems to be on the uptick again in pro wrestling with the formation of Air Boom and their subsequent crowning as tag team champions.
With WWE looking to revitalize a once-proud division, talk of free agent tag teams has once again become relevant in pro wrestling circles. But what if WWE were given free reign to pair any two pro wrestling superstars from any era?
The possibilities are as intriguing as they are endless.
CM Punk and Roddy Piper
1 of 25Piper and Punk are notorious habitual line steppers, and a tag team of these two quick-tongued talents would be just as entertaining on the mic as in the ring.
Punk's high work rate mixed with Piper's Hall of Fame-caliber brawling would make for a very physical dream team.
Shawn Michaels and Randy Savage
2 of 25Randy Savage and Shawn Michaels drop the two greatest elbows in pro wrestling history.
A pairing between the two in their primes would mean we could have seen a stereo elbow drop from these two WWE greats.
Rey Mysterio and Ricky Steamboat
3 of 25Rey Mysterio and Ricky Steamboat would have been a heart-stopping team in terms of high-flying acrobatics.
The high-flying ways of Mysterio and Steamboat could have meant magic in a WWE ring on any given night.
Chris Jericho and Edge
4 of 25We got a slight taste of what could have been in 2009 when these two teamed up for a brief run as tag team champions before Edge suffered an Achilles injury.
Edge's replacement of the Big Show turned out to be a mildly surprising success, as Jerishow went on to temporarily reinvigorate the tag team division.
However, given the success of Jerishow, one could only imagine how successful a Jericho and Edge tag team could have been.
Randy Orton and Jake Roberts
5 of 25With both these top-flight WWE superstars drawing comparisons to their snake-like personalities, it would only be natural to see a team of Orton and Jake Roberts in better days.
With both Orton and Roberts having razor-quick finishers that come out of nowhere, their matches together would have an added level of excitement.
The two may need to adopt a double-team finisher for the sake of cohesiveness.
Rey Mysterio and Evan Bourne
6 of 25Mysterio and Bourne have tagged together in the past and it was incredible.
With Mysterio on the back end of an injury-plagued, albeit Hall of Fame career, a tag team would be optimal for the sake of longevity.
John Cena and Hulk Hogan
7 of 25John Cena and Hulk Hogan are two of the WWE's biggest stars ever, and a one-off pairing of the two for a high profile tag team match against heel opposition could have drawn a strong rating/buyrate given the proper hypothetical circumstances.
Cody Rhodes and Goldust
8 of 25For years there have been rumblings of a possible Rhodes-Goldust sibling rivalry to culminate at WrestleMania.
I am of the opinion that a tag team between the two would be equally as intriguing as the two ring generals could create yet another strong sibling tag team.
Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho
9 of 25Shawn Michaels and Jericho in a regular tag team would be excellent to witness, and is one of the few dream teams on this list that could still theoretically happen.
There is already evidence that their two very similar styles would work in the ring.
Jericho and Michaels showed their propensity to put their minds together to create compelling television during their historic feud of 2008, and a tag team featuring these two fan favorites would be no exception.
Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara
10 of 25The careers of Rey Mysteiro and Sin Cara/Mistico will forever be linked given their similarities as famed Lucha Libre talents, and should Mistico pan out in WWE, a tag team between these two leading up to a feud could be the last great run of Mysterio's career.
Chris Jericho and Brian Pillman
11 of 25The Loose Cannon was a talented ring general and an underrated worker back in his day.
Dual promos featuring Jericho and Pillman would be entertaining, and their two styles would complement one another brilliantly.
Ric Flair and Randy Savage
12 of 25Ric Flair and Randy Savage spent much of their Hall of Fame careers feuding with one another, but a long-term tag team featuring two of the most flamboyant pro wrestlers of all time would have made just as much sense.
Just imagine Flair slapping on the figure-four while Savage simultaneously prepares to drop that big elbow. Brilliant.
Vader and Earthquake
13 of 25Earthquake famously teamed with Fred Ottman to create the Natural Disasters, which was perhaps one of the most successful and unique tag teams of all time.
Vader and Earthquake teaming as an alternate version of the Natural Disasters could have been even more successful given the athletic super heavyweight styles of both big men.
John Cena and Bruno Sammartino
14 of 25A Cena-Sammartino tag team may be a more cohesive team than Cena and Hogan, as Sammartino was a better worker.
Sammartino was WWE's top superstar before the days of Hogan and Cena, and this particular team of WWE's top stars in the right era would be pro wrestling gold.
Sheamus and Finlay
15 of 25Sheamus and Finlay representing their country in an Irish tag team only makes sense. Finlay is currently on the outs with WWE after that National Anthem fiasco, but a subsequent tag team could be a possibility if he ever gets back in their good graces.
Tyson Kidd and Evan Bourne
16 of 25Tyson Kidd and Evan Bourne are both great workers who could make a name for themselves with fantastic tag team action.
They may not be household names just yet, but all that could change with a string of brilliant tag team wresting.
Kofi Kingston and Shelton Benjamin
17 of 25Shelton Benjamin and Kofi Kingston are both known for their athletic styles, and the sky would be the limit in terms of potential for a tag team between the two.
Santino Marella and Zack Ryder
18 of 25The WWE could make use of their two top comedy acts with a tag team of Santino Marella and Zack Ryder. The Italian Broskis? Zackarella? The Italian Jobbers?
Bill Goldberg and Steve Austin
19 of 25They already have the matching trunks, goatees, and hairdos, but despite Goldberg recently announcing his intentions to return to wrestling, a return to the WWE seems highly unlikely at this point.
CM Punk and Bruiser Brody
20 of 25CM Punk and Bruiser Brody are two of wrestling's most famed rebels. Punk would have to grow out his epic Charles Manson beard and hair for the sake of solidarity.
Mr. Perfect and Michael McGillicutty
21 of 25This father-son pairing could be great, given the fact that McGillicutty already has shown off potential to be a great in-ring worker.
He just needs some of his daddy's charisma, and if it cannot be bestowed upon him. Maybe it can be paired with him in another world.
Bret Hart and Kurt Angle
22 of 25Bret Hart and Kurt Angle would be amazing in the ring together in any capacity. The elite athleticism of Kurt Angle matched with the technical wrestling prowess of Bret Hart would make for a dominant dream team.
Owen Hart and Chris Jericho
23 of 25Chris Jericho has already copped to the fact that Owen Hart is his favorite wrestler of all time. These two Canadian stars perfected the whiny heel act, and it would be quite the spectacle to see it performed in stereo.
The Big Show and Andre the Giant
24 of 25They wouldn't be known for marathon technical showcases, but the "largest tag team in the world" would be more than a spectacle, which is what both Show and Andre were known for.
The Iron Sheik and The Great Khali
25 of 25Iron Sheik in his prime would have to carry the work load, but this tag team would be entertaining just to see who would be more incoherent on the mic.
