Boston Red Sox: Casting the Fellowship of the Ring

Sean O'NeilSep 9, 2011

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2002. It is a fantastic movie which sported an incredible cast of actors who formed the nine men who voyage to Mordor as the fellowship of the ring.

Just for fun, I thought I would write this article to see which members of the Boston Red Sox organization would be the members of the fellowship.

I hope you enjoy!

Terry Francona as Gandalf

1 of 10

Gandalf was the leader of the fellowship in Lord of the Rings. Terry Francona is the leader of the Red Sox.

The two may have very different hairstyles, but Gandalf and Tito play very similar roles for their respective clubs.

Give Terry a wig.

Adrian Gonzalez as Aragorn

2 of 10

As the offensive leader for the Red Sox this season, I thought that Adrian Gonzalez deserved to be compared to the offensive leader of the fellowship.

It was Aragorn's blade that saved Frodo countless times so therefore I award Adrian with the role of the future king.

Jacoby Ellsbury as Legolas

3 of 10

Jacoby is a lot like an elf when you think about it. He's fast, he's got power and he's got good looks.

He is a pivotal member of the Red Sox like Legolas was to the fellowship, and therefore Jacoby would be the perfect Legolas.

The hair could take a while to grow out though.

Kevin Youkilis as Gimli

4 of 10

Kevin Youkilis and Gimli.

They're both kind of funny looking.

Both are powerful.

Both have interesting beards.

Carrying on!

J.D. Drew as Boromir

5 of 10

Boromir tried to take the ring from Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring. He was generally disliked and only made one major contribution to the quest.

That contribution was when he saved Merry and Pippin from getting axed by some orcs. He then died minutes later.

JD Drew is a lot like Boromir. Drew, like Boromir, is disliked by the majority of Red Sox and he does have that one shining moment.

His grand slam in the 2007 ALCS is comparable to Boromir's sacrifice at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. At least they were both able to pull off something good.

Dustin Pedroia as Frodo

6 of 10

Dustin Pedroia and Frodo carry something.

Frodo carries the ring in The Lord of the Rings films and Pedroia tends to carry the Red Sox most of the time.

They are both pretty small guys considering all that they've done for their teams and therefore Pedroia is Frodo.

David Ortiz as Sam

7 of 10

Many people tend to say that Frodo would have never made it to Mordor if it was not for Sam... Especially when you consider the fact that Sam saved Frodo's life on several occasions.

I think that the Red Sox wouldn't be the team that they are without Big Papi. Ortiz is pivotal to their success and he gives that Sam kind of boost when they need it.

And they both could lose a bit of weight.

Jason Varitek as Merry

8 of 10

Merry was a tough pick when going through the Red Sox, and here is the connection I chose between him and Varitek:

Varitek is the captain for Boston, and he is their leader.

Merry was a captain of sorts in The Lord of the Rings. It was Merry that convinced the ents to go into battle against Saruman at the end of the second movie and he led them into Isengard.

If you're able to find a better Merry on the Sox, please share your ideas.

Jonathan Papelbon as Pippin

9 of 10

I decided that Papelbon was the best Pippin because they are both easily the biggest goofballs of their respective parties.

Pippin is always making hilarious yet stupid remarks while Papelbon is doing the irish jig on the field.

Every team needs their comic relief.

Conclusion

Hope you enjoyed, and please share your thoughts!

Maybe this team will be the one team to rule them all.
