Power Ranking Every Team in England's Premier League
Amazingly enough, it has been a relatively quiet transfer period so far and, because of that, it's still a little hard to predict how the English Premier League will play out this season.
Arsene Wenger has been almost non-existent this summer.
As has Chelsea, but with new manager Andre Villas-Boas, they should heat things up pretty soon.
Manchester United will see plenty of new faces in its starting lineup.
So, there are still plenty of questions in the EPL, and that's just looking at the top of the league.
With so many question marks still abound, here's an early look at how the 2011-12 season could play out. Just remember that these rankings are bound to change with every new signing from here until the end of August.
20. Swansea City
1 of 20In: Danny Graham
Out: Dorus De Vries
Analysis: Just don't see Swansea as having enough fire power or enough money to stay in England's top league.
19. Norwich City
2 of 20In: Anthony Pilkington, Bradley Johnson, Steve Morison, James Vaughan
Out: No one
Analysis: They've made some interesting signings, but I don't see them staying in the EPL for more than a year.
18. Wigan Athletic
3 of 20In: Ali Al Habsi
Out: Steven Caldwell
Analysis: Charles N'Zogbia is most likely on his way out, and that will hurt. If Wigan wants to avoid relegation, they will have to make some important moves with the funds they get for their star midfielder.
17. West Bromwich Albion
4 of 20In: Billy Jones
Out: Scott Carson, Borja Valero
Analysis: Any team that lets this happen, against an MLS team nonetheless, drops a few spots in my book.
West Brow hasn't made a whole lot of noise during this year's transfer period. It's a long shot, but if they could land Moroccan midfielder Adel Tarrabt, it would really boost their midfield.
Still though, it's a long shot.
16. Blackburn Rovers
5 of 20In: No one
Out: Maceo Rigters, Benjani Mwaruwari, Zurab Khizanishvilli, Phil Jones, Jason Brown
Analysis: The loss of Phil Jones to Manchester United hurts, but Blackburn still needs to concentrate on finding a consistent striker.
Argentinian Mariano Pavone could help, but I think Tottenham's Jermain Defoe could serve as a big boost.
15. Wolverhampton Wanderers
6 of 20In: Roger Johnson, Dorus De Vries, Jamie O'Hara
Out: Greg Halford, Marcus Hahnemann
Analysis: The addition of Jamie O'Hara to the midfield should help, but I really like the Roger Johnson signing.
He was relatively cheap at £6.4 million, and don't forget that this guy nearly made England's international squad. Johnson, who is coming in from Birmingham, should have motivation on his side as he doesn't want to be part of another relegated team.
14. Queens Park Rangers
7 of 20In: Kieron Dyer, Jay Bothroyd
Out: No one
Analysis: Holding onto midfielder Adel Tarrabt is very key for Rangers but, even if he does leave, I would still be confident they have the resources to replace him.
I think QPR has enough money to build a team to avoid relegation.
13. Stoke City
8 of 20In: Jonathan Woodgate
Out: Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye, Ibrahima Sonko, Eidur Gudjohnsen
Analysis: Not a whole lot happening around Stoke during this transfer period, but I sort of like the Woodgate signing.
The 31-year-old journeyman should give them some smart play in the back.
12. Bolton Wanderers
9 of 20In: No one
Out: Ali Al Habsi, Johan Elmander
Analysis: Bolton hasn't signed anyone yet, but they have been linked to some popular names.
Craig Bellamy, Robbie Keane, Daniel Sturridge and even Shaun Wright-Phillips have been thrown around as possible players to make their way to the Wanderers.
It's looking like they will lose Gary Cahill, so replacing the defender will be important.
11. Everton
10 of 20In: No one
Out: James Vaughan
Analysis: Everton has been pretty quiet during this transfer period. They may sign a couple guys if Jack Rodwell leaves, but I don't seem them moving much in the table.
10. Newcastle United
11 of 20In: Sylvian Marveaux, Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye
Out: Ben Tozer, Kevin Nolan
Analysis: Frenchman Demba Ba should bring some scoring ability to Newcastle's front line, while Cabaye, who is also French, displays good vision and great ball control.
I think Newcastle will improve this season.
9. Aston Villa
12 of 20In: No one
Out: Ashley Young, Brad Friedel, Isaiah Osbourne, John Carew, Robert Pires, Nigel Reo-Coker, Stewart Downing
Analysis: That "out" list looks long, but Villa is planning on replacing Friedel with City goalkeeper Shay Given.
Other names on Villa's list include Scott Parker from West Ham and Charles N'Zogbia, the talented midfielder from Wigan.
I don't see the departure of Ashley Young as much of a hit. Aston Villa should be able to replace him with N'Zogbia.
8. Fulham
13 of 20In: John Arne Riise
Out: No one
Analysis: Andy Johnson is probably on his way out to either QPR or West Ham, but Everton is set to replace him.
The Whites apparently have their eyes set on Robbie Keane and perhaps Mexican striker Aldo de Nigris. Both would help freshen an attack that, at times, had trouble scoring last season.
I see Fulham on the way up.
7. Sunderland
14 of 20In: David Vaughan, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Sebastian Larsson, Keiren Westwood, Ji Dong-Won, Craig Gardner, Connor Wickham, Ahmed Elmohamady
Out: Jordan Henderson
Analysis: Sunderland has already made an amazing nine signings, and they are poised to make more as they have been linked to Charles N'Zogbia, Liverpool's Alberto Aquilani and Man City's Craig Bellamy.
If they can manage to hold on to Asamoah Gyan, I see a big improvement for Sunderland.
6. Tottenham Hotspur
15 of 20In: Brad Friedel
Out: Jonathan Woodgate, Jamie O'Hara
Analysis: The main news surrounding Tottenham this transfer period has been the expected departure of brilliant midfielder Luka Modric.
If he leaves, I don't see any of their current targets being able to fully replace him. It could be a bit of a down year for the Spurs.
5. Arsenal
16 of 20In: Gervinho, Carl Jenkinson
Out: Gael Clichy, Jens Lehmann
Analysis: If Arsenal lose both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri during this transfer period, it could be a big blow. However, those rumors have been floating around for a long time now, and the Gunners could very well hold on to both.
Still though, most of the news for Arsenal this offseason has been regarding players leaving rather than coming in, and they will be lucky to come out better than before.
4. Manchester City
17 of 20Out: Donal McDermott, Shaleum Logan
In: Stefan Savic, Gael Clichy
Analysis: The Carlos Tevez saga continues to dominate Manchester City's offseason, and his expected departure should hurt a little bit.
However, if he does leave, that should free up the funds for City to put together an offer for either Alexis Sanchez or, more likely, Sergio Aguero.
No matter where Tevez goes, I'm confident that Mancini and company will sufficiently replace him.
3. Liverpool
18 of 20In: Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing
Out: Paul Konchesky, Stephen Darby, Alex Cooper
Analysis: Whether the moves are questionable or not, Liverpool is at least making some this offseason.
They continue to shore up the middle and, if they are able to sign Aly Cissokho from Lyon, they will improve the defense as well.
Time will tell if the money they are spending is worth it, but I like the direction Liverpool is headed.
2. Manchester United
19 of 20In: David de Gea, Phil Jones, Ashley Young
Out: John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar
Analysis: Manchester United will probably face the biggest turnaround of any team in the EPL, as they will see the departure of three legitimate starters.
They, of course, will bring in loads of talent too, as they have already signed three sought-after names.
It's still a question mark how the new guys will perform with the pressure of playing for United but, nonetheless, the Red Devils should stay near the top of the table.
1. Chelsea
20 of 20In: No one, yet
Out: Sam Walker, Jack Cork, Fabio Borini, Danny Philliskirk, Michael Mancienne, Michael Essien (injury—six months)
Analysis: Every team in the EPL has a question mark going into the season, and Chelsea isn't any different.
Chelsea haven't seen any major changes to their squad but, now that they finally have a new manager, and with the injury to Michael Essien, expect them to make some moves, and soon.
Nicolas Anelka is expected to be on his way out, as is defender Alex. As for additions, whether it be Luka Modric or someone else, look for Chelsea to add a lot of creativity in the midfield.
Fernando Torres can only improve on last season and, assuming Chelsea adds more young talent like usual, they should only get better.
