WWE SmackDown Review: June 17, 2011
Hello Folks! Welcome to the best SmackDown review on the Internet. I know it is rather late, but I have been a busy man; I can only apologise. So with that out of the way, let’s get down to business!
Randy started the show off by totally milking the reaction he got from the crowd. I understand it must be a buzz, but you would have thought he’d do it without looking like a big head. He said he was ready to fight Christian tonight.
The crowd were pretty vocal if assuming that they were not added in post production.

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Teddy Long came out and stated that he had not received Randy Orton’s medical clearance and therefore cannot allow him to compete. Orton’s concussion was actually legitimate and was only just cleared to wrestle at Capitol Punishment.
Christian came out and said he understood Randy was “angeeery at me.” (he said "angry" weirdly.) He also said Randy can use the concussion as an excuse when Christian beats him on Sunday—which was yesterday due to the lateness of the review. Christian lost by the way.
Christian then polled the audience, asking them if they would think less of Randy if Christian managed to regain the title. I think most shouted “no” but I can’t be too sure.
Sheamus came out and put forward a very good case as to why he should be included in the match on Sunday. A match was set up between Christian and Sheamus to see if the match would be made a triple threat.
Randy said that either way, there will be consequences tonight.
A six-man tag started things off—the same six-man tag that featured on Raw last week. What a jip. Could they really not think of a new match for SmackDown? Also, how does Cara appear from nowhere? I don’t get it...
Daniel Bryan got the win over Ted DiBiase, although I don’t think he was supposed to. Ted got his shoulder up for a start, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone so surprised to win a match. Daniel Bryan got this surprising pin after his patented dropkick form the top turnbuckle.
Sheamus was interviewed about his potential title match, but nothing special happened.
Vladimir Kozlov then took on Jinder Mahal. In what was expected to be a normal squash match, Kozlov actually took control at one point. Khali just palmed Kozlov right in the face though, thus, allowing Jinder to hit his anti-climactic finisher and pick up the victory.
Seriously Jinder, you need a new finisher because the one you have at the moment absolutely sucks.
Josh Matthews asked the Big Show why he was on Smackdown and he said it was because he’d heard Del Rio was there. That makes sense. Why wouldn’t a Raw superstar be on SmackDown? Anyone would think the brands are treated as separate entities.
Big Show looked extremely angry as he relived the car crash, and Teddy Long came out to inform the giant that if he touches Del Rio, he will lose his job.
He gave the Big Show Mark Henry as a consolation. Big Show knocked him clean out and just punched him until he wasn’t moving. It looked horrendous. The match hadn’t even started and Mark Henry was carted off to the back on a stretcher.
Show looked the most dominant I’ve ever seen him.
Christian was interviewed by Matt Striker but again, nothing special was said.
Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes and Tamina took on Natalya and the two rookies she has taken under her wing. Tamina won with a Samoan drop, resulting in the third loss in a row for the rookies.
Johnny Curtis apparently has an ace in a golf hole? Okay.
The Usos took on Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel (who debuted a new theme) in an excellent tag match. It made me wonder whether the WWE is going to start bringing back tag team action. The Usos were extremely impressive, and one of them executed a beautiful powerslam after catching Slater in mid-air.
I’ve missed proper tag team wrestling.
Sweet Chin Music to Slater allowed the other Uso to pick up the win with a splash.
Del Rio arrived in another expensive car. Who buys these things? He then blabbed on about how he’d spit on Big Show etc. When the big man arrived, Del Rio ran with his tail between his legs, taking the bottom rope with him as he left.
The bottom rope collapsed so easily because it was clearly set up for Big Show’s impending tantrum in which he lifted up the barricade and threw it into the steel ring post.
Tantrum over, and it was already time for the main event.
It wasn’t the best match in the world, but it certainly wasn’t the worst. Christian shouted for the spear yet again with absolutely no-one joining in making for another cringe-worthy moment.
He picked up the win nevertheless, by shoving Sheamus’ head into the steel ring post.
Randy then made a beeline for Christian, but he ran away, leaving Sheamus in the middle of the ring. Randy closed the show by punting the Celtic Warrior, sending a message to Captain Charisma.
SmackDown was relatively good at getting me in the mood for Capitol Punishment with the Big Show standing out from the crowd. I would have chosen a different match to open the show though.
