WWE Capitol Punishment: John Cena Beats R-Truth and Retains the WWE Title

Tom ClarkJun 19, 2011

WWE Capitol Punishment has come and gone, and John Cena remains the WWE Champion after defeating R-Truth.

As if there was any doubt.

Don’t misunderstand me here, I have been an R-Truth supporter for a long time. He has more than paid his dues in the business, and his current heel turn has taken him to heights that he has never been to, especially in WWE.

I have written more than once that he deserves an opportunity at being the top guy, if only for a short while, at least to see how well he can carry it. I believe he is fully capable of being not only an entertaining champion, but a relevant one as well.

Having said all of that, there’s the little matter of John Cena, The Rock, and Wrestlemania 28.

As we all know, Cena said that he was going to hold the belt for a full year until his title defense against Rocky at WWE’s biggest pay per view next year.

When he said it, I shook my head in disbelief. Why? Because I knew, deep down inside, that John Cena is indeed good enough in the ring to fend off all challengers, and retain the belt, on his way to facing Rocky?

Yeah, I’m going to say no on that one.

Sarcasm aside, I was disappointed with the angle, because in my opinion, it completely kills any drama that may arise surrounding the championship.

If WWE creative goes with this, then no matter who is placed in the title picture during the next twelve months, fans will have no reason to watch. What would be the point, when the outcome has been predetermined, so far in advance?

Usually, these types of decisions are made behind closed doors, leaving fans simply speculating as to who will win or lose. It’s what we do here on Bleacher Report.

But, to announce it to the world just takes the fun out of it, and any suspense that could have been built is all but destroyed.

John Cena is their guy, and if he says it, it’s like the word of God being handed down. That is not meant to criticize, that is just the way it is.

So, where does this leave R-Truth? To be honest, I for one do not see that a lot of damage has been done here.

His heel turn is still very fresh, and he is getting more heat with each passing week. He is over in a big way, and this was the first big match he‘s had since he turned heel

Truth is very entertaining, and he has totally embraced the new direction his character has taken. I believe that he has not even scratched the surface of what his character is capable of. For me, we have only seen a glimpse of what he can do with this.

Despite whether or not Cena will indeed keep the belt until Wrestlemania 28, the feud with Truth should continue. Cena is often accused of not putting other guys over, but a lot of that stems from whatever the powers that be want him to do. By just working main event matches against him, John will help mold Truth into a big time player in the eyes of the fans.

Truth’s stock will continue to rise, and he does not necessarily have to walk away with the WWE Title, at least not right away, to enjoy the rub he will get from Cena.

Another element at work here is the fact that unless WWE is very careful, R-Truth will have to turn face again.

I see a lot of similarities in R-Truth and The Rock, in terms of the heel turn being the saving grace.

Fans didn’t care about Rocky Maivia, until he opened his mouth and began insulting them. Suddenly, he was over like gangbusters. He continued to run them down, week after week, generating all sorts of heat, until eventually, he became funny, and very entertaining.

Now before any Rock fans out there climb the nearest mountain to shout his praises, let me say that I am not saying that Truth will reach that same level of success. I am only suggesting that if given enough time, fans will begin to cheer for Truth again, if for no other reason than because they can’t wait to see what he’s going to do next.

If he is allowed to continue on the path he’s currently on, the potential for R-Truth in WWE, is limitless. A lot less talented guys got over with a lot more work, and for a performer who adapts so easily to the ever changing needs of the overall storyline, R-Truth should be just as successful. I, for one, am in his corner.

Just call me “little Jimmy.”
