WWE Capitol Punishment Results: Same Cena, Different Pay-Per-View

Alfred KonuwaJun 19, 2011

WWE Capitol Punishment was another paint-by-the numbers pay-per-view as expected, with no major developments outside a pair of secondary championship changes which is actually normal by their standards.

Predictability was one of my themes to watch in the primer for Capitol Punishment, and the pay-per-view certainly didn't disappoint in that department.

The predictability theme was best personified in the main event that saw John Cena defeat R-Truth in basically a replica of his last win at WWE Over the Limit minus the double team and weapons.

R-Truth did his best to carry the match, but it was all but academic that eventually Super Cena would rise to the occasion to win overcome the odds.

Almost on cue, Cena recovered from a match-long beat down with his signature Superman comeback capped off by an Attitude Adjustment.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to waste your time with  some "10 percenter" gripe about Super Cena.  Hulk Hogan virtually helped build the WWE empire with that exact same act which has proven to be effective with larger than life babyfaces.

However with WWE's pay-per-view buy-rates slumping badly due to the perceived predictability of John Cena matches, the Super Cena finish will certainly did WWE no favors in convincing fans to rush to the box office and support their pay-per-view offerings.

WWE is currently in somewhat of a holding pattern as SummerSlam lies on the horizon.  While R-Truth outperformed as a place holder for Cena to play with prior to running into "tougher" competition (Del Rio, anyone?), WWE has put themselves in a tight spot by failing to book John Cena as a vulnerable champion despite their best efforts.

Forget about what the Internet thinks about Super Cena.  When casual fans, however, begin to key into how a pay-per-view involving John Cena will end, this is when WWE needs to go back to the drawing board with more intriguing ideas for their main events.
