WWE Capitol Punishment Results: 10 Matches We Need to Get at SummerSlam

Drake OzJun 19, 2011

WWE Capitol Punishment is barely in the books, and the July pay-per-view is the second-ever Money in the Bank.

But that doesn't mean we can't jump nearly two months ahead to "The Biggest Party of the Summer," SummerSlam.

WWE officials have worked hard over the last few years at building up the show as arguably the company's second biggest PPV of the year, and as a result, we should get a quality card for the August pay-per-view.

Based on current storylines, we can all speculate what matches we will likely see at SummerSlam, so today I've decided to do something similar.

Here are 10 matches we need to see at Summerslam...that can actually happen.

10. Wade Barrett vs. Daniel Bryan

1 of 10

By the time SummerSlam rolls around I'd fully expect Wade Barrett to be moved on from both his feud with Ezekiel Jackson and the Intercontinental Championship scene.

But he won't be in the World title picture either, so Barrett will need a new, meaningful feud that people actually want to see.

And who better than Daniel Bryan?

Obviously, he and Barrett have a ton of history together—even though the WWE might not acknowledge it—and they've never feuded since moving on from NXT Season 1.

If they do, though, perhaps Barrett can get some of his momentum back and Bryan can get some much needed mic time.

9. R-Truth vs. John Morrison

2 of 10

If you've been watching the WWE at all lately, you know that all indications are that John Morrison and R-Truth will face off at SummerSlam.

Both of these guys will likely be participants in the Raw Money in the Bank match next month, with Truth likely costing Morrison the briefcase to lead to a match at "The Biggest Party of the Summer."

Fine by me.

Though Morrison's injury has chopped up this feud a bit, Truth's heel turn has been nothing short of phenomenal and a feud with a big baby face like Morrison would go over well with the crowd.

The creative team has done an excellent job of keeping the Truth/Morrison feud going (even though Truth is feuding with Cena as well), and it's really made me want to see more from the former tag team partners.

8. Sin Cara vs. Averno

3 of 10

Sin Cara's struggles in the WWE have been well documented, so well documented, in fact, that the company has brought in fellow luchador Averno to get Sin Cara out of his rut.

Averno recently signed with the WWE for one purpose only: To make Sin Cara look good.

While the crowd has popped for Sin Cara and he seems to be getting over, he's still been a botch machine and hasn't quite adjusted to the WWE style.

Since he's Triple H's pet project, though, he's going to have a lot more leeway than most, and the WWE's signing of Averno is evidence that the company is willing to do whatever it takes for Sin Cara to succeed.

Sin Cara's said that he's "most comfortable" working with Averno, and that could lead to a high-quality match at SummerSlam that's much different from what we typically see in the WWE.

7. Divas Championship: Beth Phoenix vs. Natalya

4 of 10

With all due respect to Kelly Kelly and Brie Bella, I don't think anyone wants to see them wrestle for the Divas Championship at SummerSlam.

They may look good, but they're not going to do much more than that.

On the other hand, Natalya and Beth Phoenix may not be quite the model types—even though they're still very attractive—but they are the best options to bring some much needed glory back to the struggling Divas division.

Outside of maybe Gail Kim, they are the top two women's wrestlers in the WWE, and the possibility of seeing them face each other one-on-one is the only reason why I can even tolerate the Divas at this point.

6. The Big Show vs. Kevin Nash

5 of 10

At the 2011 Royal Rumble, Kevin Nash returned as "Diesel" for a brief appearance in the 40-Man Royal Rumble match.

The crowd went wild for Diesel, and then nearly blew the roof off the building when he had a stare down with The Big Show after being eliminated.

In a recent interview, Nash said the crowd's raucous reaction to his Royal Rumble appearance almost led to a match against The Big Show at Wrestlemania 28.

Of course, that didn't happen, but Nash now wants the bout to take place at this year's SummerSlam.

Me too, if only for nostalgic purposes and nothing else.

5. Ted DiBiase vs. Cody Rhodes

6 of 10

Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes have spent a lot of time rekindling their old flame in recent weeks, tagging to take on the likes of Sin Cara and Daniel Bryan on more than one occasion.

And after seeing DiBiase and Rhodes back in the same corner, some fans have called for a permanent reunion between the former Legacy members.

But I, on the other hand, see this as the perfect opportunity to turn DiBiase face.

Though he's gotten more TV time in the last few weeks on Smackdown than he probably got in the last year on Raw, overall, DiBiase hasn't done much of anything since parting ways with Legacy.

So, why not keep this temporary pairing going for a while, split Rhodes and DiBiase up, and then have the feud culminate with a bout at SummerSlam?

It may be just what DiBiase needs to revive his career.

4. WWE Championship: John Cena vs. CM Punk (If Punk Loses, He Leaves the WWE)

7 of 10

We've all heard the rumors about John Cena taking on Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, but if Vince McMahon knows what he's doing, then he'll give ADR's spot to CM Punk instead.

Punk's current WWE contract reportedly expires in September, and he's apparently leaning toward taking a leave of absence from the company at the very least.

So, as evidenced by Punk getting recent wins over Cena and Rey Mysterio, it appears that the company is trying to keep Punk happy.

If they really want to make sure Punk stays, though, there's only one way to do that: By having Punk beat Cena for the WWE title at SummerSlam (and, of course, re-sign with the company as well).

3. No. 1 Contender's Match: Alex Riley vs. Alberto Del Rio

8 of 10

It's tremendous what the Raw creative team has done with Alex Riley in just a few short weeks as a baby face character.

But I honestly don't have enough faith in those guys to think that the feud between Riley and The Miz will extend all the way to SummerSlam, even though that would be good for both guys in the long run.

Therefore, I see the feud ending before then, with both The Miz and Riley moving on to fresh feuds on Raw.

The WWE does appear to be serious about pushing Riley, however, so I see him staying around the main event level for a feud with Alberto Del Rio.

After getting the best of Big Show in his current feud, Del Rio can claim that the only thing left for him to do is win the WWE Championship.

Likewise, after defeating The Miz at Money in the Bank, Riley can also lay claim to the No. 1 contendership for the WWE title.

Then, to settle the score, the two will meet at SummerSlam and determine the true No. 1 contender.

2. The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio

9 of 10

All I gotta ask is, why not?

With the other top Raw stars already locked into SummerSlam matches, I'd throw one of the WWE's top faces (Rey Mysterio) against one of its top heels (The Miz).

Perhaps you could have The Miz lose against Alex Riley at Money in the Bank, then the Anonymous Raw GM will schedule a match between Miz and Rey Mysterio on Raw the next night.

But, before the match can even begin, an angry Miz will attack Mysterio from behind and prevent the match from happening, thus opening the door to a feud between the two Raw stars.

Count me in.

1. World Heavyweight Championship: Christian vs. Randy Orton vs. Chris Jericho

10 of 10

Unless another great feud comes along, the 2011 "Feud of the Year" will likely be Christian vs. Randy Orton.

But, even though it's been nothing short of spectacular, two months is a long way to go until SummerSlam, and bringing a third party into the equation might not be a bad idea.

And that third party should be Chris Jericho.

After all, Orton is the one who "injured" Jericho and put him on the shelf, so it only makes sense for these two to feud upon Jericho's return.

The WWE should also keep Christian in the picture, though.

I'd have Orton, Jericho and Christian all feuding over the World Heavyweight Championship, because they're three of the best workers in the company and would probably put on one hell of a match at SummerSlam.
