WWE Jumps on the Green Lantern Phenomena but Goes Bigger

John KindelanJun 16, 2011

If you don't live under a rock you know that the new movie Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, arrives in theaters tomorrow. The promotion for this film is everywhere, from Subway commercials to LG phone commercials; you can't look anywhere on TV without seeing Green.

WWE and comic books are no stranger to one another, as they themselves have put out comic books, had a Saturday Morning cartoon and at one time employed a Super Hero (Whats up wit' 'dat?!).

Beyond that, it's known that several of the superstars themselves are big comic book geeks, Kofi Kingston, Santino Marella, Cody Rhodes and Jerry Lawler have all publicly talked about their love of comics. Lawler has even illustrated several non WWE books.

The fans are obviously comic book enthusiasts as well. The next time you watch Raw or SmackDown, try and play the game "Find Superman." There is always at least one fan in the crowd sporting the S Shield, or maybe a Bat symbol and of course recently the Green Lantern. The WWE is like watching comic books come to life, real heroes taking on evil villains and performing heroic and death defying feats in the process.

For those not familiar with the Green Lantern, the story is about a group of intergalactic space police force of sorts that uses the green energy of Will to fight evil. A Green Lantern is assigned to a specific sector to patrol and keep the peace. Earth, sector 2814, has a few, but the most popular, and the one in the movie is Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds. Recently it came to be known that the Green Lanterns were not the only Lanterns in the universe. Each different lantern represented a different emotion, and of course had a different color.

Red Lanterns are fueled by Rage, Orange is Avarice (greed), Yellow is Fear, Blue is Hope, Purple is Compassion, Pink is Love, Black is Death and White is Life. The story "Blackest Night" told of the war of all the Lanterns; it was written by Geoff Johns and was a fantastic tale of heroism and overcoming adversity.

The WWE has parlayed this theme of lanterns into something fantastic. If you go to WWE.com right now and check out their first story, they have categorized the WWE Universe Superstars into the appropriate Lantern Crops. This isn't some little article where they say John Cena is a Green Lantern because he's full of Will power; no, they have really gone above and beyond with this site. The scrolling across the screen to view the different corps, the colorizing of the Superstars and the specifics in which they've shown they've done their homework is just fantastic.

Don't miss out on seeing one of the best Green Lantern tie-ins yet. Even if you're not a fan of comics, I think you'll appreciate the coolness that they have done here.
