WWE Capitol Punishment: A Step in the Right Direction?
As you may well know by now, WWE have come up with the name “Capitol Punishment” for their upcoming pay per view event in Washington DC.
Over the past couple of years, the WWE have allowed really bad pay-per-view names to enter the WWE calendar. "Elimination Chamber" and "Hell In A Cell" are just two of these horrendously uninspired names.
The IWC has been crying out for more inventive names for these PPV events, and I believe this is the start of a refreshing PPV calendar.

It shows that the creative writing team have pulled their finger out for once and not focused on a match type, but executed a clever play on words from the location. It is replacing the Fatal 4-Way PPV, which is a start. It has also been reported that "Night of Champions" is being replaced with a public vote.
This is a bad idea in my opinion, as they could end up with the most stupid name on the list like they did a couple of years ago, when people just dumped the "No Way Out" PPV name for Elimination Chamber.
"Over the Limit" is also a good pay per view name that was added to the calendar, but some would argue that the "Judgment Day" name that it replaced was much better
Do we need regular PPV event names outside of the Big Four? Why can’t there be different ones every year?
This is what I enjoyed about the “In Your House” PPV events. They always had inventive names to accompany them, and actually paved the way for most of them to become recurring—"No Way Out," "Unforgiven" and "Backlash" to name just three.
Maybe if the WWE decided to change the name of every PPV barring the Big Four, it would garner more interest, increasing PPV buys and therefore, ratings.
By tailoring the name to a current feud or storyline, people would know more regarding what the pay-per-view is about. Of course this would have to be complimented by excellent storytelling. Back in the day of the “In Your House” PPVs, I’m fairly sure people knew what was going on even if they didn’t watch it.
A recent example of this would be when the original Nexus first invaded. People I talked to who didn’t even watch wrestling knew what was going on and seemed genuinely interested in the exciting storytelling. The rest is history of course—WWE dropped the ball, and now we are stuck with Nexus II and The Corre. Good job.
Anyway, I digress. If pay-per-views were specifically named for these storylines, I believe that WWE would get the same reaction from the people who don’t usually watch it or those who are just casual viewers.
Imagine if The Nexus had been given their own pay-per-view? WWE Aggression?—or something along those lines. (I’m not a WWE creative writer.)
Either way, that would have been amazing. People would have bought it just to see what they would do on this pay-per-view, where the name has been dedicated to their actions.
The opposite argument to this of course, is the fact that this has been done before and was obviously dropped in favour of regular pay-per-view events. But has this become stale? Do we want something fresh? Or would this be a step in the wrong direction? Would it be essentially going backwards?
Right now, all we know is that "Night of Champions" will be changed to "Vengeance" and we have "Capitol Punishment" to look forward to. I, personally, am really pleased with the replacement of Fatal 4-Way—but what do you think?
