NBA Draft 2011: Plethora of Options for Utah Jazz on Draft Night.

Brandon DennisJun 15, 2011

The Utah Jazz own the third and the 12th picks in the upcoming draft. The Jazz have needs at every position except PF and SF (Depending on your view of Hayward being a SG or SF). With two lottery picks the Jazz can fill two of those needs and perhaps more depending on any possible trades.

The 2011 NBA Draft is considered to be a weak draft based on the lack of elite talent. However, the draft is deep in prospects who could develop into strong role players to complement any superstars on the team.

Here is a list of potential situations the Jazz could find themselves and where they could go with each pick. There are more possibilities than what I will present as each position and player could provide a lengthy debate.

If you disagree, agree, or have other possibilities I would enjoy hearing them as well as an explanation as other viewpoints provide a wider spectrum than just my own.

Point Guard

I would like to see the Jazz address this position with the third pick considering the options. Personally I like Brandon Knight. Knight is a tall PG, who is a bit skinny and needs to put on some pounds (preferably muscle). He is a solid defender who wanted the ball in his hands during crunch time as he hit two game winners in the tournament.

Calipari, in a recent article in the Salt Lake Tribune, described Knight as hard of a worker as anyone who he has coached. This list has included some solid talent through the years and especially at the PG position. He wants to improve his game and is a high character player. This is huge in Utah and could help the organization to be able to keep him for years to come.

Kemba Walker is another possibility. He has the quickest first step in the draft and is a winner. He may be a bit small for the Jazz's liking, but you can't count him out as a possibility.

Jimmer Fredette is a possible wild card here. I do not see the Jazz reaching for him with the third pick, but if they go big with the third pick and he is still available with the 12th pick he will be considered. I'm not a fan of Jimmer with the Jazz. The Jazz are trying to improve defensively and Jimmer is a liability on defense. There is no arguing his offensive ability, but will it overcome his defensive liabilities. I don't see him as a great fit for the Jazz, but he reportedly wowed the Jazz in his workout and could easily land with the team.

One last option, although a long shot is if the Cavs do not take Irving with the first overall pick. If they decide to go with Kanter or Williams it could provide the Jazz with the opportunity to pick up Irving, who despite not playing much this past season due to injury is considered by most to be the top prospect in the draft.

Shooting Guard

With no top rated prospects in the draft this year at shooting guard, the Jazz would most likely address this pick with the 12th pick.

Alec Burks is an option with the 12th pick, if he falls that far. He only shot 29 percent from three-point range, which is a concern, but he is an excellent slasher. This would keep defenders from cheating off of him. If he can develop an outside shot he could potentially be a sleeper in this draft.

Klay Thompson is another possibility. He does not have explosive athleticism, but is a good shot with excellent range. His size is also another bonus as he stands at 6'7".

Marshon Brooks is an option for the Jazz at 12, or later depending on any deals the Jazz may be a part of. Brooks was the second leading scorer in the nation. His game has been compared to Kobe Bryant's, although he is clearly no Kobe. It's not very known how well his defensive game will translate as Providence played a lot of zone defense through the year. If he could improve his three-point shooting percentage a bit he could fill a need the Jazz have struggled to fill for years and possibly be another steal.

Small Forward

ANAHEIM, CA - MARCH 24: Derrick Williams #23 of the Arizona Wildcats dunks the over Kyle Singler #12 of the Duke Blue Devils during the west regional semifinal of the 2011 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the Honda Center on March 24, 2011 in Anaheim,

SF may not be a position the Jazz are actively looking to fill depending on where they want to play Gordon Hayward.

Derrick Williams should only be considered by the Jazz if they have no doubts he can be a SF. If they project him as a PF he is a waste of time as he is similar to Milsap and they already have Favors. If the Timberwolves pass on Williams and he is available with the third pick can the Jazz pass him up? He is excellent when he wants to be. Film shows he does not always play hard, which could be a major concern as well as his inability to jump off one foot. This gives defenders extra time to swarm him in the paint making it much more difficult for him to score. With this said he was lights out from deep last season and if he can play SF he can be an excellent addition.

Chris Singleton would provide the Jazz with a lock down defender. He does not add much offensively, but if he was able to develop a shot from the corner he could potentially become a Bruce Bowen type player. He has great size and is excellent in transition. If the Jazz are serious about improving defensively Singleton would be a great way to start.

Vessely is a possible option with the third pick. I do not see the Jazz drafting Vessely due to his contract situation in Europe. He is considered by many to be the top international prospect. Could develop into a solid player someday, but the possibility of not coming to the NBA for a few season could steer the Jazz in another direction.

Kawhi Leonard will most likely be drafted in between the Jazz's third and 12th pick. If the Jazz are seriously considering Leonard it would be in their best interest to possibly shop the third pick and move back a couple of spots.

Jordan Hamilton could possibly be a dark horse candidate as he is a prolific scorer. The problem with Hamilton is his shot selection. He can become a little shot happy, but if he was able to be a bit more selective he could develop into a 20+ ppg player.

There are a number of prospects at PF who could go on to have long NBA careers. The addition of Derrick Favors to the Jazz all but eliminates the possibility of selecting a PF. Favors is looked at as the PF of the future and much time and energy will be spent on his development. For this reason I will not list anyone in this section.

Any players listed as PF drafted by the Jazz would be drafted because of their ability to play C and will be addressed in the following section.

Enes Kanter, perhaps one of three potential candidates I would not mind with the third pick (Knight and Williams being the others). He is still a bit unknown as he has not played organized basketball in over a year. When he has had the chance to show off his skills he has fared well. The only problem I have with Kanter is if he is drafted by the Jazz there are not enough minutes to go around. Jefferson, Favors, Okur, and Milsap all require minutes at PF and/or C. Adding Kanter only causes problems which would need to be solved through a trade to open up minutes for him to play. There is no point in drafting him if there are no minutes available.

Bismack Biyombo is the only other bid I would consider for the Jazz. He has next to no offensive game, but blocks nearly everything within his reach. This is a skill the Jazz have lacked for years. Someone to patrol the paint and to disrupt shots if not block them. With Biyombo and Favors defending the paint teams will no longer be able to fearlessly drive to the basket. Biyombo could go from anywhere from 8-20. If he is available at 12 and the Jazz draft him it will once again present a problem with minutes.

Ideal Situation

My ideal situation for the Jazz would be to package their third pick to the Wizards for their 6th and 18th picks. With potentially a protected pick next year.

With the sixth pick Brandon Knight somehow gets past the Raptors and the Jazz are able to pick him.

With the 12 pick the Jazz draft Biyombo, who can live off blocked shots, rebounding, and dunks.

With the 18th pick the Jazz are able to draft Marshon Brooks. This would give them another scoring option. Chris Singleton could also be an option if he somehow fell to the 18th pick leaving the Jazz with the choice of excellent scorer, or lockdown defender.

If this situation somehow cam to fruition it would give the Jazz a starting lineup like this in two to three years:

PG: Brandon Knight

SG: Marshon Brooks or Gordon Hayward

SF: Chris Singleton or Gordon Hayward

PF: Derrick Favors

C: Bismark Biyombo

One of two of these spots could potentially come off the bench depending on where the Jazz draft next year as well as the other pick they received in the D-Will trade. That would bolster the bench of the Jazz to go along with Milsap and give the Jazz a young team that can grow and develop together and thus increasing their chances of no longer being the "dark horse pick" and legitimately competing for a championship in a few years
