UFC 131 Results: Brock Lesnar, and the Top 5 Heavyweights in UFC

Adam WellsJun 12, 2011

With UFC 131 in the history books, the future of the heavyweight division became a little more clear with Junior dos Santos retaining his spot as the No. 1 contender for Cain Velasquez's championship.

Dos Santos' three-round destruction of Shane Carwin moved his record to 13-1, 7-0 in UFC. The win over Carwin was by far the biggest of his career, and now he has to take on the top heavyweight in all of MMA.

Carwin, meanwhile, has lost two consecutive fights and hasn't looked good since the last minute of the first round of his fight with Brock Lesnar. With his lackluster performance against dos Santos, he has a long climb back up the ladder in the heavyweight division.

So which fighters are the best of the best in the UFC heavyweight division? Here are the top five heavyweights following last night's event.

5. Shane Carwin

Record: 12-2, 4-2 in UFC

Despite two consecutive losses, Shane Carwin remains in the top 5 heavyweights in the company. He has a lot of work to do in order to fix what ails him as a fighter; the stamina problem that plagued him against Brock Lesnar didn't look like it got any better against Junior dos Santos.

Carwin deserves a little pass following this most recent loss because it was his first time back in the octagon following an 11-month layoff due to neck surgery. One more loss though would really make you wonder how much he has left in the tank.

4. Frank Mir

Record: 15-5, 13-5 in UFC

Frank Mir is one of the most polarizing heavyweights in the UFC. His record is still very good, but he hasn't beaten an elite fighter since making Brock Lesnar submit in 2008.

Despite all the criticisms, Mir is winning fights. He isn't a championship contender right now, but with one more victory he could vault himself into the discussion for a title shot.

Mir and Shane Carwin, who ranked fifth on this list, could be swapped, and I wouldn't argue with it.

3. Brock Lesnar

Record: 5-2, 4-2 in UFC

Brock Lesnar was supposed to challenge Junior dos Santos at UFC 131, but another bout with diverticulitis forced him off the show and out of the sport until at least January.

When healthy, Lesnar is still one of the most dangerous heavyweight fighters in the world, but there are few guys who can match his combination of power and natural wrestling ability. The big question when he eventually does return will be how he reacts to getting punched; he folded against Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez when he got hit in the face. If he wants to be a champion again, he will have to prove he can take a punch.

Dana White is expecting him back early next year. I think that is a little optimistic, with May or June being more realistic.

2. Junior dos Santos

Record: 13-1, 7-0 in UFC

Junior dos Santos earned a shot at the heavyweight title after UFC 117 last August. Eager to get back in the octagon and not wanting to wait for champion Cain Velasquez to recover from surgery, he put that shot on the line against Shane Carwin at UFC 131.

In typical dos Santos fashion, he put on a boxing clinic and decimated Carwin over the course of three rounds en route to a decisive victory. He is expected to challenge Velasquez for the belt when UFC comes to Houston in October.

Dos Santos needs to improve his wrestling and ground skills, but if he can keep Velasquez standing, he could be the new champion.

1. Cain Velasquez

Record: 9-0, 7-0 in UFC

Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez now knows who he will make his first title defense against when Junior dos Santos annihilated Shane Carwin at UFC 131. The date hasn't been confirmed, but it's expected to take place in October.

Velasquez underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff that he suffered when he was smashing Brock Lesnar's face in. It will be interesting to see what kind of effect that surgery will have on his power when he comes back.

He is the most complete heavyweight in all of MMA, and he just gets better and better with each performance. Velasquez could control this division for a long time to come.
