UFC 131 Results Video with Dana White: MMA Judging is “Horrendous”
A satisfied UFC President Dana White spoke to MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani tonight following the UFC 131 event featuring Junior dos Santos’ victory over Shane Carwin to earn himself a UFC title fight.
Though the fight did go to a decision, it was near being stopped twice. Once due to the sheer number of shots Carwin was taking in the first round and once due to a cut in the third round. But the fight went the distance anyway.
“Obviously it went three rounds, so [referee] Herb Dean was right,” White concluded. “I think he’s the best referee in the business.
“Every time that guy’s in the Octagon, he’s in charge. He’s the boss,” he added. “I have nothing but respect for the guy.”
Though dos Santos looked dominant tonight, White still had positive things to say about former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin, who seemed to have better cardio in this fight than he did in his last.
“I have nothing but respect for Shane Carwin and the performance that he put on tonight.”
Helwani then informed White that the Las Vegas oddsmakers have released their initial lines for the future dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez UFC heavyweight title right. Crazy as it may seem, dos Santos is the favorite at this moment in time.
“That’s interesting,” White responded, seeming surprised by the news.
“Cain Velasquez is an animal,” he continued, praising his organization’s champion. “I don’t know how you make him the underdog.
“It all depends on his recovery and how he’s doing, but he’s going to fight in the next five months.”
The future main event between these two heavyweights was certainly the big story tonight, but it was somewhat shadowed by another night of interesting judges’ decisions.
The biggest one came in the form of a unanimous decision loss which Michihiro Omigawa took in his fight against Darren Elkins. Despite the fact that Omigawa seemed to dominate most of the fight, he somehow came out a loser on the scorecards, which prompted Dana White and the UFC to still give him his win bonus.
“Fans get pissed off and I get pissed off because [the judges] are hurting the fighters,” he explained. “It screws up your record, it screws up your money, it screws up your legacy.”
This has been a common thread for quite some time in the MMA world, but it seems to be becoming more and more frequent.
“I could go on for days [about] what’s wrong with the officiating in this thing. What’s even scarier is that we have [expletive] TV’s in front of these guys now. Maybe you couldn’t see it before or you had bad lights or a bad angle. You have a television in front of you now. Anybody who gave those 30-27’s tonight should never score another fight again. I mean, you have to absolutely not know what you’re doing to score that fight 30-27.”
“Apparently [the monitors] do not work at all.”
But White does have something that he and the UFC can do about bad decisions like the one we saw tonight.
“We’re going to pay you (Omigawa) your money, and we’re going to treat you like you won,” he said.
