UFC: 5 Bantamweight Fighters Who Could Benefit from Having a Flyweight Division
Dana White recently announced a flyweight division coming to the UFC and there are many fighters that could benefit from the 125 lb. weight limit.
"We're going to add the 125-pound division very soon," White announced Thursday. "We have to get out there and create the division—bring guys in, sign them, put on fights, decide who the best is and have a title fight."
Some of the top flyweights that would end up fighting in the UFC include Yasuhiro Urushitani (18-4-6), Mamoru Yamaguchi (25-5-3), Ian McCall (9-2), Jussier da Silva (9-1) and Yuki Shojo (11-5-2).
There are plenty of current bantamweight fighters that would like to see a lighter weight class added and these are five fighters who could benefit from it.
No. 5: Brian Bowles
1 of 5
Former WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles only has one defeat on his record and that was to current UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz.
Cruz, who is 5'8", is one of the tallest fighters in the division and, while Bowles is only one inch shorter, he could benefit fighting the shorter fighters that will be making their way to the 125 lb. division.
Depending on how long Cruz rules the division, a rematch isn't something fans really want to see. Bowles' best move is to try out a new division and reestablish his position as a top fighter there.
No. 4: Antonio Banuelos
2 of 5
Bantamweight fighter Antonio Banuelos (18-7) was most recently seen struggling against Miguel Torres in their bout at UFC 126.
At 5'3", this future flyweight contender could produce some very entertaining fights against fighters that are more of his size.
In his bout with Torres, the distinct reach and height advantage was apparent as Banuelos could barely get his hands on the former champion.
Even if he won't be a top contender, he could still pose interesting challenges to other undersized bantamweights.
No. 3: Scott Jorgensen
3 of 5
Former WEC title challenger Scott Jorgensen recently made his UFC debut when he knockout out Ken Stone at the Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale.
With a 12-4 MMA record overall and a wealth of experience fighting the top contenders and the champion of the 135 lb. division, Jorgensen could use a new weight division to obtain the momentum he had when he took his five-fight win-streak into his title fight with Dominick Cruz. He lost a decision to the much taller fighter.
No. 2: Joseph Benavidez
4 of 5
Joseph Benavidez could end up being the UFC poster-boy for the 125 lb. division. At 5'4" he is one of the shortest fighters in the division, but he a good example of why there needs to be a 125 lb. weight division.
Without it, he has found success fighting in the bantamweight division and went 5-2 inside the WEC with his only losses coming to Dominick Cruz.
"Joe B-Wan Kenobi" made his UFC debut at UFC 128 when he defeated Ian Loveland, a 5'8" fighter fighting out of Team Quest.
No. 1: Demetrious Johnson
5 of 5
At 5'3", Demetrious Johnson is the shortest fighter in the UFC and it isn't holding him back just yet. He used his superior wrestling to take his much taller opponents down, including his last opponent, Miguel Torres, who had a six inch height advantage.
Johnson is the perfect example of what the lighter weight classes are all about, showcasing speed and skill all packed into one exciting fighter.
Fans have been calling for a flyweight title bout between Johnson and Benavidez, and it could be the perfect one to determine a champion before the influx of flyweight talent outside the UFC makes their way into the leading organization.
