WWE: Tyson Kidd Revives Matt Striker's Sinking Career

Robert AitkenJun 4, 2011

At first, this article was going to be about how Tyson Kidd seemed to whip out a new agent every week on WWE Superstars. For two weeks, it was Michael "P.S." Hayes.

Last week, Armando Estrada returned to WWE with a look far from that which made him great as Umaga's manager. This week, it was Matt Striker's turn. It didn't seem like this was going to work out much either.

Then, I saw the opening ten minutes of Superstars. For most of it, Striker was seen talking on his cell phone and funny moments were said at ringside that I haven't seen since Chris Jericho was a pro on NXT.

Eventually, the phone went away and Matt Striker kicked into action. After a word with his client, Tyson Kidd had a good counter to one of Trent Barreta's moves, picking up yet another win over the Dudebuster.

Still, I had seen Estrada be a winning manager last week and not return. If Striker wanted to stay with Tyson and not rejoin Jack Korpela on commentary, something drastic would need to happen.

Striker grabbed a mic and laid down one of the best promos in WWE so far this year. Finally, Tyson Kidd had found his mouthpiece. More importantly, Matt Striker had finally found his place.

Matt Striker went from school teacher to WWE superstar in 2005 when he quit his job after it was revealed that he was using sick days to take off from teaching and wrestle matches.

Striker debuted during the Kurt Angle Invitational and, after being featured for a few weeks in the segment, went down to Deep South Wrestling for some development.

Striker came back to the main roster with his teacher gimmick and hosting his classroom-themed show. Striker would wrestle from time to time before being shipped to ECW in August 2006.

There, Striker aligned with The New Breed, consisting of Kevin Thorn, Marcus Cor Von and Elijah Burke. The group would take on ECW Originals. Eventually, people were released and the storyline lost momentum.

After his time with The New Breed was over, Striker looked to be back to being a singles competitor. Suddenly, he aligned himself with Viscera, who was repackaged as Big Daddy V. Striker fit as a fantastic manager for most of a year.

In 2008, Striker was moved to RAW via the Supplemental Draft. His role didn't seem like it would be much and what probably kept him around in WWE was the release of Mick Foley from his contract.

Foley was Smackdown's color commentator at the time, which shuffled Tazz to Smackdown and left Striker with a chance to be the new color guy for ECW. It would make for Striker's career for most of the last three years.

Striker has been a commentator on ECW and Smackdown, as well as Superstars matches for the Smackdown brand and a few matches on NXT, where he has been the host for the past year. Striker also appeared as a commentator at pay-per-views, usually working with Jerry "The King" Lawler and Michael Cole.

Striker would show off his wrestling history in his commentary, which seemed to rub the wrong way with Cole and Lawler. Striker would even make it a point to talk about how certain moves could hurt, which a good color commentator and former in-ring competitor should do.

Striker was relegated to Superstars after Booker T replaced him on Smackdown in February. A month later, Maryse was added as his co-host for NXT at the beginning of their Redemption season.

Striker's role in WWE was shrinking every month and the idea of him being on the chopping block was becoming more of a possibility.

As Striker spoke to Kidd, you could tell that this was not a one-time thing. It may be the start of the push that Tyson Kidd was always entitled to and the role that Matt Striker has always been meant for.

Not only will Striker be able to show off his mic skills and intelligence, but he can make the impact that only a manager can make. In the world that WWE is now, managers are scarce and those who can't speak are kicked to the curb.

This could be the resurgence in managers, especially if Matt Striker becomes the next incarnation of Bobby "The Brain" Heenan and manages multiple people at once.
