Ten Dream Matches in the WWE We Have Yet to See Besides Rock vs. Cena

Kevin GermanyJun 4, 2011

The Rock vs. John Cena at Wrestlemania 28 inspired me to write this list of dream matches not meant to be.

If you are familiar with my work, I like to create dream pay-per-views. Now I will create some dream matches for those dream pay-per-views. Each of these seven dream matches will have its own venue and its own announce team.

Ideally these matches will take place when the competitors are either in their primes or just outside of their primes.

For example, we won't see John Cena face Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania XXIX. We also won't see matches like Andre the Giant vs. John Cena because their careers never crossed paths.

Enjoy!

Chris Jericho vs. Bret Hart

Daniel Bryan vs. Kurt Angle

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. CM Punk

John Cena vs. Bill Goldberg

Triple H vs. Sting

Natalya vs. Kharma

And many more!

Bret Hart vs Kurt Angle in a Submission Match

Wrestling purists rejoice at this match. Tazz and Michael Cole call the match. This is back when Cole was a normal play by play commentator. Tazz provides the insight needed for a technical masterpiece.

The feud leading up to this match is extremely intense with the Canada vs. America angle. Rogers Centre in Toronto will rock in excitement once this match gets underway. Hart is the patriotic face while Angle is the obnoxious heel.

Bret "The Hitman" Hart and Kurt Angle are often noted as the greatest technical wrestlers of all time. Both men were amateur wrestlers.

Angle won an Olympic gold medal in 1996 with a broken neck. Bret Hart wrestled for Mount Royal College in the mid 1970s, according to the ever-reliable Wikipedia.

Imagine the countless reversals from ankle locks to sharpshooters and vice versa. Give them at least 25 minutes and you have an incredible match. Angle finally makes the Hitman submit to the ankle lock.

Winner: Kurt Angle

Ideal time when this would happen: 1998

Brock Lesnar vs. Shawn Michaels

The brand separation between Raw and Smackdown during the Ruthless Aggression Era deprived us of one of the greatest possible showdowns ever. This showdown will be held in Shawn's hometown of San Antonio in the Alamo Dome.

Brock Lesnar vs. Shawn Michaels would tear the house down. Lesnar's combination of power, technical prowess, and freakish athleticism made him the next big thing.

HBK's incredible in-ring skills only make opponents look better. Lesnar's short tenure ultimately negated any chance of this match happening.

In short, this would be an incredible match. Jim Ross and Lesnar's manager Paul Heyman have the call here. HBK kicks out of an F5. Lesnar kicks out of a sweet chin music.

After 30 minutes, HBK pulls off the shocking upset by connecting on another sweet chin music.

Winner: Shawn Michaels

Ideal time when this would happen: 2003

Sin Cara vs Rey Mysterio in a Lucha Libre Match

4 of 13

This is an interesting under card match. A lucha libre match between these two would be a dream match in Mexico. Estadio Azteca in Mexico City is the perfect place to hold this venue. It can hold over 75,000 screaming fans torn on which técnico to cheer for.

It is tough to pinpoint the ideal time in which this match will happen because Mysterio's prime was well before Sin Cara began to wrestle. Rey Mysterio has slowed down due to his numerous injuries over the years. Sin Cara didn't officially wrestle until 2004.

The Mexican promotion of CMLL is where Sin Cara got his start. Therefore, the CMLL announcers call this match. It is safe to say this match would be incredibly intense and fast-paced.

For the first fall, Sin Cara uses La Mistica to make Rey Mysterio tap out to the first fall. Rey Mysterio hits the 619 and subsequent splash for the second fall. Then Sin Cara does his version of the 619 to pick up the victory.

Winner: Sin Cara

Ideal time when this would happen: 2006

Undertaker vs Bill Goldberg in a No Holds Barred Match

5 of 13

Like Shawn Michaels, Undertaker never faced Goldberg because they were on separate brands during the Ruthless Aggression Era.

Streak vs. Streak is the perfect way to set up this match. The Georgia Dome is the perfect venue because Goldberg made his name in Atlanta.

Undertaker's streak was not as big of a deal back then as it is now. Goldberg's streak in WCW was 173 matches in a row without defeat. That's even more impressive.

Goldberg hits five jackhammers along with seven spears to pick up the victory in a vicious, hard-hitting match.

Winner: Bill Goldberg

Ideal time when this would happen: 1999

Kharma vs Beth Phoenix

6 of 13

This match can be huge if built up properly. I am not kidding when I say this could be the most hyped Divas match in a long time.

Kharma terrorized the WWE Divas division before she became pregnant. She provided a spark to the Divas division. Fans look forward to Kharma's post-match beat downs on heel and face Divas alike.

In the WWE, the only two Divas who would realistically have a chance against Kharma would be either Natalya or Beth Phoenix. Natalya would be a good addition to this match but I would rather see a 1 on 1 showdown between Kharma and Beth Phoenix instead of a three-way.

Vince McMahon and an original Diva Sunny call this match at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Beth Phoenix kicks out of the Implant Buster. Then she finishes off Kharma with a Glamazon akin to the Hogan victory over Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania III.

Winner: Beth Phoenix

Ideal time when this would happen: 2008

Bruno Sammartino vs Hulk Hogan

Madison Square Garden in New York is the perfect venue to have this iconic match up because MSG is where so many timeless WWE moments were made. Hogan was WWF's top dog during the 1980s while Sammartino was the face of the company in the 1960s and early 1970s.

To give you an idea how dominant Sammartino was, he had two WWWF title reigns lasting a combined total of eight years. Eight years! Eight months is considered an extremely long reign today.

The ever-reliable Wikipedia told me they have never wrestled against each other. Sammartino was supposed to wrestle Hogan in Wheeling, W.Va., in February 1980.

Unfortunately, Hogan pulled out due to injury. Sammartino's final match in the WWF was a tag team match with Hulk Hogan against King Kong Bundy and One Man Gang.

The fans would be cruelly divided between two fan favorites from different eras. Hogan's star power along with Vince McMahon's vision demolished the territorial wrestling system.

Sammartino appealed to a large group of Italian-Americans living in New York. This match would be a classic throwback to the days of yesteryear.

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan call the action here. They witness the leg drop and a win for the man wearing red and yellow.

Winner: Hulk Hogan

Ideal time when this would happen: 1980

Sting vs Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell Match

8 of 13

Sting and Undertaker worked in WCW together back in the early 1990s. Whether or not they faced each other is unclear. The perfect venue for this match is the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Georgia Dome was WCW's venue for big events.

The best way to handle the buildup is to focus on the mind games. Sting and Undertaker are both known as masters of psychological warfare.

Make this more of a mental war than a physical war. Undertaker is the borderline satanic monster heel from his Ministry of Darkness days. Sting would be the mysterious antihero from his WCW days.

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler call this match.

Ideally, the match will be in a Hell in a Cell. Plenty of blood will be spilled. Sting's baseball bat and Undertaker's litany of weapons will make this match extremely violent. Undertaker wins after three tombstones and several heart-stopping moments for the fans.

Winner: Undertaker

Ideal time when this would happen: 1999

Bill Goldberg vs Stone Cold Steve Austin in a No Disqualification Match

9 of 13

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler call this match as well. Austin and Goldberg do have some previous history in 2004. Austin was the guest referee in the poorly received Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg "dream match" at Wrestlemania 20.

Bill Goldberg and Steve Austin have never had a match against each other. Goldberg has an official 173-match winning streak in WCW. Austin revolutionized the concept of the antihero during the Attitude Era.

Austin-Goldberg won't be a technical masterpiece. It will be a full-blown brawl spilling outside of the ring at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Austin connects on a stunner but Goldberg kicks out of it.

Goldberg turns the tides with his spear and a jackhammer combination but Austin kicks out of that! The fans are chanting "This is awesome!" Goldberg finally puts the Texas Rattlesnake away with yet another spear and jackhammer.

Winner: Bill Goldberg

Ideal time when this would happen: 1998

The Rock vs Shawn Michaels

10 of 13

This is the ultimate dream match for many fans. However, due to HBK's injury-forced hiatus from 1998 to 2002, he never had the chance to go 1 on 1 with the Great One. Now, Miami is the venue for this epic match. Rock will get the majority of the cheers since Miami is his hometown.

What better announce team to have than Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler?

Shawn Michaels and the Rock have had real-life bad blood. This stemmed from when HBK apparently tried to hold down the Rock back in 1997. The feud can deliver in the ring and on the microphone.

In my opinion Rock is the greatest mic worker of all time. Likewise Shawn Michaels is the greatest in-ring performer of all time.

Rock kicks out of sweet chin music. Shawn Michaels kicks out of two Rock Bottoms and three people's elbows. After 30 electrifying minutes, the Rock hits his third Rock Bottom to finally pick up the victory.

Winner: Rock

Ideal time when this would happen: 2002

The ultimate main event is...

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Hulk Hogan

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Hulk Hogan was supposed to be the dream match at Wrestlemania XVIII. For whatever reason it didn't come to fruition. Instead we got Rock vs. Hogan while Austin faced Scott Hall.

The nWo revival in the WWE was a huge disappointment. Hogan's betrayal of the group shortly after Wrestlemania XVIII gave it a death sentence. Likewise Austin's stint in WCW did not achieve nearly the success he had in WWE.

Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin during the height of the Monday Night Wars is the ultimate dream match in my opinion. Austin was always at his best when he was against a group. The nWo interferes, but Austin defeats Hogan with three stunners.

Winner: Stone Cold Steve Austin

Ideal time when this would happen: 1998

Conclusion

12 of 13

Let me know what your dream matches would be in the comments section. Remember this is MY list, so opinions will differ.

Thanks for reading!

But wait, there's one more dream match.

Phantasio vs the Shockmaster in a Mask vs Mask Match

13 of 13

Give Jesus Rocha credit for introducing me to the greatest wrestler in WWE history. Phantasio was undefeated throughout his entire career in the WWE.

He gave his opponent and the referee wedgies after his victory. You read that correctly; Phantasio only had one match because he was so good.

The Shockmaster has the distinction of having the greatest debut of all time. Sting introduced him to a rousing ovation.

Darth Vader tried to hire him but the Shockmaster declined so he can wrestle Phantasio. Darth Vader does offer to make Vader's spaceship the Death Star the venue in this match.

It's such a riveting match that I cannot consciously give analysis to it.

Winner: Phantasio

Ideal time when this would happen: 1993
