WWE Over The Limit 2011 Review: May 22, 2011 (Part 2)

Daniel MasseyMay 23, 2011

Hello and welcome to Part Two of this in-depth analysis of WWE Over The Limit.

The Divas title was on the line next. Brie and Nikki Bella came out in some weird capes that ended up getting all tangled up when they backflipped into the ring.

Cole just moaned all the way through the match saying how boring it is. He said what most people used to think but we still hate him for it. We’re allowed to say it, we’re the IWC. For Cole to say Divas matches are boring is just disrespectful.

Brie Bella focused on Kelly Kelly’s shoulder and elbow for the majority of the match and at the first sign of Kelly Kelly gaining the advantage, Brie swapped for Nikki and they retained the championship! I wasn’t expecting twin magic to play a part in the match and I definitely wasn’t expecting Brie Bella to retain!

Something else surprised me also—Kharma didn’t show up. The main question I have is why the hell not? She should have flicked the head off every Diva in the ring then gone for Cole.

The first main event of the night followed the Divas match. Randy Orton took on Christian. After watching the match on SmackDown a couple of weeks back I had high hopes for this match as the one on SmackDown was above and beyond pay-per-view quality in my opinion.

The fact that this was on before the Kiss My Foot match was an utter disgrace.

There was a definite buzz around this match as the crowd began to come alive.

Christian gained the early advantage and was all over The Viper, grounding him with dropkicks and submission moves. He stopped a “SuperOrton” routine with a spinebuster which I thought was a bit uncharacteristic for Christian, but cool nonetheless. He also hit Orton with a flying headbutt, immediately reminding me of Chris Benoit.

Randy Orton regained some control and debuted a submission move that looked like a reverse Walls of Jericho. Christian reached the ropes, but the move seemed very effective. I hope he adds that to his repertoire as a permanent move.

Christian pump-faked Orton showing that he would have been subject to an RKO, had he jumped off the ropes.

Christian, after reversing an RKO, called for the spear and tried to get the crowd to chant along with him—they weren’t having any of it—the bloody spoilsports. I felt a bit sorry for him to be honest because you just know if that was Edge the crowd would have gone mental. I think it took away from the quality of the match because it was a bit cringe-worthy when they didn’t join in.

He ran right into a powerslam. Orton was about to punt Christian but thought twice and paid for it with a spear. He kicked out. In a finish that I thought was excellent, Randy picked up the victory with an RKO. This was after a multitude of reversals that kept the fans on the edge of their seats though.

I don’t see how anybody could be disappointed with this match. I believe it was easily the best match of the night.

Christian shoved Randy at first, but managed to keep a cool head and shook his hand as a show of respect. I’m kind of glad there was no heel turn as it would have taken away from the quality of the match in my opinion.

Cole vs Lawler followed. Cole tried to get out of the match by producing a doctor’s note but the referee ripped it up. Next he’ll be saying he forgot his kit. It didn;t matter anyway as Jerry proceeded to rip Cole’s clothing off for some reason. It’s a Kiss My Foot match, not a Bra and Panties match.

Jerry Lawler picked up the victory eventually, after destroying the Colemine with...Cole.

Lawler waved to the back and Eve came out to give Cole a moonsault. The referee spoilt the illusion by shouting at Cole to put his arms in numerous times. Even I heard him the first time there’s no need to keep yelling it.

J.R came out next and soaked Cole in BBQ sauce. Yes, he did join commentary for the main event—what a winner.

Cole tried to run to the back but Bret Hart appeared and locked in the sharpshooter on Cole while Jerry shoved his foot down Cole’s gullet. Hopefully we can get back to normality now this charade is over.

It was then time for the main event, which would have won match of the night had it not have been for the awful finish.

I’ll just list the things Miz and Riley did to Cena for ease.

  • Attacked him with a briefcase
  • Threw him into a steel barricade
  • Whacked him with the monitors
  • DDT on the steps
  • Slammed steps into his ribs
  • Assaulted him with a Singapore cane
  • Snap Suplex on the stage
  • Whipped him with the cameraman’s belt
  • Hit him with a steel chair
  • Skull-Crushing Finale on a chair
  • Chair shot right to the head (expect a fine Miz)

Cena didn’t say he quits. Even when Miz asked the children in the audience to tell Cena to give up they said no on his behalf. CeNation is stronger than we thought!

During all these assaults, the referee was taken out. Miz used a recording, reminiscent of the 1999 I quit match at the Royal Rumble, to gain the victory. If the show had ended here I would have been an extremely happy man, but no. Cena couldn’t possibly lose the title could he?

The ref found the recording and restarted the match. Within two minutes Cena had Miz saying he quits in the STF. What a rubbish ending. Imagine the swerve if Miz had won? WWE missed a trick there and it just left me in a bad mood with the pay-per-view.

All in all it wasn’t a bad pay-per-view and I wouldn’t have been miffed had I have paid for it (it was free in England)

They should have taken the title off Cena and allowed a clean finish in the Intercontinental title match. These were the main two points that spoilt it for me.

However, despite this, I thought it was a very entertaining pay-per-view and if you haven’t seen it yet I suggest you watch it.

Thanks for reading! Please leave comments below. I always do my best to reply to all comments as you well know!

I’ll be back tomorrow with my weekly Raw review.
