WWE over the Limit 2011: Will R-Truth Steal the Victory Against Rey Mysterio?

Tom ClarkMay 20, 2011

On Sunday May 22, R-Truth is facing off against Rey Mysterio at WWE’s Over the Limit pay per view.

This match is the result of heat built between the two WWE Superstars when Truth attacked Rey back on the May 9 edition of Monday Night RAW.

This match promises to be an interesting one, as Truth is currently enjoying the most spotlight he has possibly ever had in WWE. His recent heel turn has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for him, as each week he delivers another spot, another promo, to establish his new character.

To put it another way, R-Truth is seriously getting over.

The only thing left to do is start winning high profile matches. And for Truth it does not get more high profile than working Rey Mysterio at a WWE pay per view.

For me, this match can be looked at a few different ways.

In one respect, this is Truth’s first major exposure after turning heel, so this match holds a high level of importance for him. Nothing can kill a new push faster than losing a match and if this were to happen on Sunday, Truth could potentially take a step back.

There really is no reason why Truth should not go over in this match. A lot of work has been done in cementing him as a heel on RAW, and it seems unlikely that WWE would risk losing the crowd by allowing Truth to do the job for Rey.

Rey is a professional, in every sense of the word. If this match leads to a feud that would be mutually beneficial for both men, then he should have no problem in taking the pin.

A victory for Truth would go a long way in the eyes of the fans, inasmuch as he would have to be taken very seriously in his new role as a heel. To be honest, Truth needs this match, and he needs to be the one with his arm raised at the end.

But on the flip side of the discussion is the possibility that Truth may lose to Mysterio on Sunday.

This could happen, and it may not do that much damage to his push after all. Think about it, so far R-Truth has been portrayed as a frustrated man, a man who used to perform for the fans, until discovering that when he needed them the most, they were not there for him.

Now, he cares only for himself, no longer content to cater to the people he feels have been a detriment to his career. He feels as though he is being cheated at every turn, as if there is some sort of shadowy conspiracy playing out behind the scenes, keeping him down. He feels robbed of any real opportunity at success in WWE.

Losing to Rey Mysterio would only add more fuel to the already blazing fire.

Truth would be irate, so beside himself, that he could once again snap, perhaps “injuring” Rey as he did to John Morrison on April 18.

That sort of angle, shown for the entire world to see on the pay per view stage, would be very good for him, and even better if Rey perhaps took a little time off after the event. Truth would be given the credit for shelving two of WWE’s most popular Superstars, and at that point fans would see that he is for real.

Then, WWE would only need put him against another top star, all the while continuing to build him up as a major player on RAW.

Right now, this is a win win situation for R-Truth.

Winning against Rey Mysterio by hook or by crook at Over the Limit would get him over. Losing to Rey, if handled the right way, would also work in his favor. Either way, his character can continue to evolve, adding another layer to what has already been accomplished.

But the third, and perhaps less desirable option, is for Rey to flat out pin Truth, with no drama after the match.

This is the tough one, in my opinion. If R-Truth drops a clean pin, and then Rey leaves the ring with no further confrontation, then his character could quite possibly lose momentum that he could never get back.

The only answer to saving the moment for him would be if he destroyed Mysterio the next night on RAW.

Of course, he has done that already and too much of that kind of heat may not be good for him either. He would appear weak, a guy who is only dangerous after the fact, when someone’s back is turned.

If he can’t buy a victory, then how could any WWE fan possibly take him seriously?

Over the Limit could potentially be a make or break moment for R-Truth. Will his name be mentioned in main event scenarios in the coming months? Or will we all look back on this pay per view as the moment when what was once going north suddenly went south?

It’s up to R-Truth, and his ability to do his part. He has to be enjoying the ride thus far. It’s also up to WWE creative, and their ability to follow through on a promising storyline.

Unfortunately, when they are behind the wheel, the end result is not always a safe arrival.
