WWE SmackDown Review: May 13, 2011

Daniel MasseyMay 14, 2011

Hello folks! Welcome to the best SmackDown review on the Internet. SmackDown came to us from Nashville Tennessee. I’ve taken a picture of that arena! It’s weird seeing somewhere you’ve been on holiday on TV. Now that that shameless self promotion is out of the way, let’s get down to business.

Christian kicked off SmackDown by saying he respected Teddy Long’s decision to have him defend the title on last week’s SmackDown and congratulated Orton on winning the championship. Who does that? I thought this was the WWE? Who does he think he is, Cena?

He subtly announced there would be a rematch at Over The Limit. There was no hype surrounding it whatsoever. That’s going to increase the buy-rate, WWE—mind you, if they put on a match like they did last week, that pay-per-view will be worth any amount of money.

Sheamus interrupted. This was awesome as it was the same sort of feeling I had when The Miz interrupted the party on Raw (you can read about it here). Sheamus actually looked like a viable threat to Christian.  He said he knows the WWE Universe want to see Christian versus Sheamus. Mark Henry interrupted.

The crowd went wild at the prospect of Mark Henry versus Sheamus.

They decided to join forces against Christian and beat him down until Orton and his beard showed up to make the save. As if Christian wasn’t humiliated enough last week—now he needs Orton to help him fight his battles.

The obvious impending tag match was announced in a backstage segment with Teddy Long, Christian and Randy Orton. Yes, Long said “Christan” again in case you were wondering.

Daniel Bryan faced Sin Cara next with a complete image overhaul—well, the same image overhaul Dolph Ziggler received, a haircut. The freaky lights were on again.

This match was a dream match for me as I felt Daniel Bryan, with his extensive wrestling skills, would be able to compliment Sin Cara well—and I was right. Sin Cara put on the best show since he debuted. I was right. I can’t remember the last time I saw such technical wrestling abilities displayed.

Every aerial move executed smoothly and I have to say, I think this is in part due to him working with Daniel Bryan, whom some consider the best wrestler in the world. It really was like poetry in motion.

Chavo Guerrero kept mentioning how Sin Cara is following in his footsteps and using a Guerrero move-set. Chavo left his commentary position to pull Daniel Bryan off the top turnbuckle, allowing Sin Cara to execute his finisher.

When Sin Cara eventually saw it on the Titantron, or the “Tron” as the cool kids call it, he shoved Chavo to the ground. He was not a happy man.

Layla came to the ring to complain about injuring her knee when Michael Cole interrupted to resounding boos.

He talked about how he would beat Jerry Lawler at Over the Limit, wear the Hall of Fame ring and emphasized how his mother would love it. Way too far yet again and what’s worse is that Lawler wasn’t even there to defend this attack on his relatives!

Layla told Cole to shut-up, to which he replied, “Divas shouldn’t even be in the WWE!” Kharma then arrived. She demolished Layla after Cole tripped her up. When she eventually turned her attention to Cole, he ran into his Colemine and she left him alone! Why can’t Cole just get his comeuppance?

Kane faced Barrett in a non-title match next. Barrett cut a little promo to inform everyone that Big Show was in Japan with the rest of the Raw Superstars. It wasn’t a particularly bad match—Barrett focusing on Kane’s left arm to maintain the advantage. Cole and Booker had a funny exchange about The Corre being at ringside. The commentary can be amusing at times.

It seemed like a very long match to end in a disqualification. When a match lasts as long as this one did, you feel jipped when it ends in a disqualification. The Corre attacked Kane until Ezekiel, sporting a new theme tune, came to rescue him. He exploded into the ring and took care of business.

He tried to shove Heath Slater outside but failed miserably. It was hilarious—I have added the picture for your amusement.

The numbers game was eventually too much for Jackson, and The Corre were presented as a dominant force. It’s hard to take them seriously after the embarrassment they suffered at the start of 2011.

Khali came out for a "kisscam" and ended up being berated by Jinder Mahal, who slapped the Punjabi Playboy twice. Khali did not attack him back for some reason. To be continued...

Orton and Christian had another corny backstage segment.

Ted DiBiase was in the ring after commercial, set to face Cody Rhodes. “It has become customary for him to bring out his assistants.” This is unfortunate to say the least. The paper bag thing is detrimental to Cody’s character now, in my opinion.

Ted DiBiase showed a really unique roll-up at one point and seemed to have an excellent chemistry with Cody Rhodes. I think a feud with Rhodes would enhance DiBiase’s career by a long way.

CrossRhodes gave Cody the victory, but we were the real winners after witnessing another excellent match.

Matt Striker then interviewed The Corre. Heath Slater put Wade’s title on the line in the proposed match against Ezekiel Jackson at the next pay-per-view. He’s like that bloke that says too much, resulting in trouble for someone all because of their big gob.

The tag match pitting Sheamus and Mark Henry against Christian and Orton was next.

It wasn’t a bad main event, allowing Mark Henry to get his foot in the door with regards to main event status. Sheamus is back in the picture now after his extended squashing on Raw. He has worked his way up the roster.

I think Superstars will instinctively stay away from the King of the Ring next year, after seeing the damage it does.

Christian picked up the victory after an average match.  A blind tag on Orton allowed him to execute his finisher on Sheamus. Orton gave Henry an RKO to prevent the save.

They ended the broadcast by shaking hands in the middle of the ring.

What did you think of SmackDown this week? Did it meet your expectations? Please leave a comment below. I reply to all comments eventually and it makes this all worthwhile, so let me know what you think!

Thanks for reading.
