WWE Over the Limit: 10 Matches We’d Love to See at the Next PPV

Graham GSM MatthewsMay 13, 2011

On Sunday, May 22, 2011, WWE presents its second annual Over the Limit pay-per-view. Currently, only two matches have been announced, with two more to be made official tomorrow night on SmackDown.

I have viewed past slideshows regarding the upcoming event and their predictions regarding everything that has been speculated to happen. However, my article will cover only the matches that I would like to see take place with my preview of the contest and its victors.

Keep in mind, I will include no spoilers as to what is being confirmed tomorrow, as these are only my personal speculation similar to everyone else. Last year's debut event resulted in a major letdown, so hopefully this year can out-do the lackluster card from last year with its potential to be a solid show.

John Cena vs. the Miz ("I Quit" Match for the WWE Championship)

John Cena vs. The Miz for the WWE Championship

To kick off my article, I'll start with the two matches already announced for this month's Over the Limit on this past edition of RAW. In the main event of the pay-per-view, we will witness John Cena defend his WWE Championship against the former champion, The Miz.

The two have not been feuding on a regular basis since WrestleMania 27 due to the pure chaos that has changed the WWE landscape immensely. At the Extreme Rules pay-per-view, John Cena pinned The Miz to finally earn his long awaited revenge and capture his eighth WWE Championship.

I expect this match to be the culmination of this four-month long rivalry with the newest RAW members attempting to get their deserved shots at the gold.

Don't take The Miz's sidekick, Alex Riley, for granted either, as he still seems to appear on RAW to aid Miz despite being drafted to SmackDown a few weeks ago. This could mean the relationship between the former NXT pairing could reach its climax come Over the Limit in a significant moment to cost Miz the match, or just another scheme in the creative team's careless booking.

The Champ could not have chosen an easier stipulation, as Cena has basically proved to us viewers that he does not give up, and probably never will, to keep his slogan consistent. It is possible they surprise us with an upset victory by the Miz, but this is basically the most easily predicted match on the card.

Nonetheless, expect the two to put on the best match they've ever engaged in together, similar to what we saw them provide us with two weeks ago on RAW.

Final Prediction: John Cena defeats The Miz to retain the WWE Championship.

Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole

Wow, is this rivalry still active?

I was very upset this would be a major match taking place at WrestleMania 27 but, in the weeks leading up to it, I found myself very hooked to this storyline. The return of Jim Ross was highly anticipated for this viewer but, after seeing Cole emerge victorious at the past two pay-per-views, I find myself hitting rewind on the entire feud.

Cole's bickering on commentary has gotten to the point where it would help enhance my RAW experience by removing him from television, or at least off Monday Nights. I realize McMahon is not high on Ross returning full time but, with the reaction he gets when the Boomer Sooner theme song plays, it's undeniable that the fans want to hear good ol' Jim Ross.

A stipulation should be added that the loser leaves RAW, sending Cole to SmackDown indefinitely. There is no chance Cole escapes this contest unscathed.

Final Prediction: Jerry Lawler defeats Michael Cole.

Cody Rhodes vs. Daniel Bryan

The more and more Cody Rhodes is exposed to television, the higher my interest grows for this rising young star. His stock within the company has quickly risen in a short matter of time due to this critically acclaimed rivalry with Rey Mysterio over the last few months.

Rhodes has a tremendous showing on the Grandest Stage of Them All, surprising most viewers in picking up the upset victory against the Master of the 619. The rivalry just recently culminated at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view with Mysterio going over, but having Rhodes look strong in defeat in their very exciting Falls Count Anywhere Match.

With the Ultimate Underdog being sent packing to Monday Nights due to the shocking WWE 2011 Draft, his void would be filled by former United States Champion, Daniel Bryan. These two have yet to cross paths, and I believe it would make for a very intriguing match if given enough time.

Both have bright futures on SmackDown; a mini-feud between the two could be just the thing they need to further elevate their careers.

Final Prediction: Cody Rhodes defeats Daniel Bryan.

Sin Cara vs. Chavo Guerreo

Sin Cara Shakes Hands with Chavo Guerrero

Speaking of those affected by the 2011 WWE Draft, the ever exciting Sin Cara found himself drafted to SmackDown, and has already made a name for himself with impressive showings against Tyson Kidd and Jack Swagger. His style differs from Rey Mysterio, and his mysterious persona is what makes his matches that much more intriguing.

As of last week's Friday Night SmackDown, it seems a feud is beginning to embroil between Sin Cara and fellow Latino Superstar, Chavo Guerrero. I have always anticipated Sin Cara clashing with Mysterio one day, but a feud with a veteran such as Chavo is something I've overlooked.

Their styles should mesh nicely and provide us with a good old fashioned Lucha Libre-style contest. We have seen no such thing since the feud between Eddie and Rey in 2005, so it's nice to finally see Chavo being utilized for a change.

Chavo is all for putting over younger talent, but that doesn't mean he won't bring Sin Cara to his ultimate limit. I surely hope this rivalry extends and reminds me how awesome the Cruiserweight division of the WWE used to be before it was abolished.

Final Prediciton: Sin Cara defeats Chavo Guerrero.

Brie Bella vs. Kharma for the Divas Championship

5 of 11

In such a short time, Kharma has made one of the most impactful debuts in recent memory, if not ever. She has quickly become one of the greatest things to happen to the Divas division for the first time in a long while, and she hasn't even wrestled her first match yet!

I am highly intrigued to see what she can accomplish in the ring following an absence from professional wrestling for over a year. Her attacks over the last few weeks have it clear she's capable of greatness and pure domination—just listen to the chants!

I am going to be brutally honest when I say I had to actually research which Bella held possession of the Divas title, as they switch so frequently it becomes to get old real fast. I find it humorous that they received more television time when they were accompanying the guest hosts every week on RAW, rather than when they held the title.

Both of the twins are very lackluster in the ring, so it still surprises me as to why the toy belt was given to them in the first place. I'm expecting for the artist formerly known as Awesome Kong to make her long-awaited in-ring WWE debut at Over the Limit and capture the Divas Championship within a matter of seconds.

Final Prediction: Kharma defeats Brie Bella to win the Divas Championship.

Wade Barrett vs. Ezekiel Jackson for the Intercontinental Championship

A breakup of The Corre has been teased for quite some time now, and it finally came to fruition this past SmackDown with the exile of Ezekiel Jackson. I've been one of very few who believes Jackson has potential to become a major star in the WWE, despite his lack of wrestling skills and mic skills which can be improved in time.

Seeing that Wade Barrett holds the Intercontinental Championship, it only makes sense for him to defend it against Ezekiel Jackson at Over the Limit. I'm behind both men for big pushes, but Barrett needs it more at the moment, otherwise there is no future for the Corre.

Final Prediction: Wade Barrett defeats Ezekiel Jackson to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

Kingston vs. Ziggler vs. Swagger vs. McIntyre for the U.S. Title

It's a shame the way the 2011 WWE Draft was formatted, since basically RAW now contains the same mid-card wrestlers as it did on SmackDown. This means the same feuds and matches, just on a different show.

Kofi Kingston had a tremendous reign with the United States Championship two summers ago, so I expect him to defend his title with honor similar to his previous reign against all challengers. Kingston has had singles feuds with every man involved in this match before, but this is just an attempt to fit them all in on the card.

Similar to TNA's X-Division, this match has the potential to be an awesome opener if given acceptable time and plenty of exciting moments. All these men deserve better than what is currently being presented to them.

Final Prediction: Kofi Kingston retains the United States Championship.

Big Show and Kane vs. Nexus for WWE Tag Team Titles

8 of 11
Mason Ryan vs. Kane
Mason Ryan vs. Kane

Over the last few months, we have witnessed the destructive duo of Big Show and Kane dominate most of the WWE roster, specifically factions such as The Corre and The New Nexus. Their reign officially began as WWE Tag Team Champions nearly a month ago, winning the belts from Corre members Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater.

With a rule stating that the Unified Tag Team Champions can appear on either brand, Show and Kane have extended their war path to Monday nights. All members of the New Nexus have become victims, and further losing any credibility they claimed to have before.

I am not interested in seeing these two Goliaths destroy any potential contenders to their titles, especially these two stables with bright futures if booked properly. Realizing that we've seen the Corre contend for the tag titles numerous times, I would hope the Nexus gets their rightful shot at the once prestigious belts in a handicap match to make it even.

If it were to be a standard tag team match, recent events have lead me to believe CM Punk and Mason Ryan would be the two to contend with their ongoing tension and a rumored babyface turn by Ryan. The Nexus has been booked to look weaker than Scotty Goldman now more than ever, and don't plan on pushing them again anytime soon.

Final Prediction: Big Show and Kane defeat Nexus to retain the WWE Tag Team Championships.

Rey Mysterio vs. R-Truth vs. Alberto Del Rio (No. 1 Contender for WWE Title)

9 of 11
Rey Mysterio, Alberto Del Rio, and The Miz
Rey Mysterio, Alberto Del Rio, and The Miz

As of now, none of this three established stars are featured on the Over the Limit card. With the lack of faces on the RAW roster, and the recent injury of John Morrison, this leaves Rey Mysterio to fend for himself against R-Truth and Alberto Del Rio.

A preview of another potential feud between Mysterio and Del Rio was given during last week's RAW, where Del Rio sat on commentary during his tag team match and nearly got involved to cost him the win. We've seen these Latino Superstars compete against one another so many times in the last six months that it has begun to become redundant and predictable, so I hope a renewal of this rivalry that just recently ended isn't planned.

However, on this week's Monday night broadcast, signs pointed to Mysterio's next rival to be R-Truth, as Truth attacked the Master of the 619 from behind following the No. 1 Contenders match that he competed in. According to backstage reports, this feud was originally planned to occur this summer, but might come to fruition sooner than expected due to Morrison's immediate injury.

The only logical explanation is to include the three in a Triple Threat match at the pay-per-view, with the winner earning a title shot at the following event. My only problem with this contest is the fact we just witnessed the same type of match occur on RAW, so we would more than likely see more of the same moves with the horrid addition of R-Truth.

Final Prediction: Alberto Del Rio wins No. 1 Contendership.

Randy Orton vs. Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship

10 of 11
Christian vs. Randy Orton
Christian vs. Randy Orton

In what was one of the better main event matches we've seen occur on SmackDown in the last few months, Christian and Randy Orton have amazing chemistry and know how to tell a story in the ring. It's been nearly five years since the last time these two have clashed—throw the World title into the mix and you have yourself a classic.

I was among those disappointed to see Christian lose the prestigious title so quickly, but you can not help but realize it is a part of something much bigger. Signs point to a heel turn seeing Christian's reaction from last week's show, which should provide us with a fresh story and certainly making Friday nights much more interesting.

I believe this might be one the rematches scheduled for Over the Limit, but only time will tell. This has the potential to be the match of the night, especially if it results in a turn to the dark side by either man.

I see Orton winning the match to continue to feud and further fuel Christian's pursuit of the World Championship.

Final Prediction: Randy Orton defeats Christian to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

With nearly two weeks remaining until Over the Limit arrives, which of these matches do you believe will make the cut? What other matches did I fail to include that could make solid additions to the card?

With the rivalries already building towards the show, I predict this show to certainly be an improvement fro last year's event. Each match should make the upcoming Over the Limit worth ordering, if given correct build-up and proper advertising.
