WWE: A Closer Look at It's Hatred for and Insistence to Job Cruiserweights

Ryan FryeMay 10, 2011

March 3, 2008 will always live in the annuls of WWE infamy.

Vince McMahon had always preferred bigger, more muscular men. As former WWE Superstar MVP put it on Dave Lagana's I Want Wrestling podcast "If you are 6'4 with abs, you have a shot." But on this date, Vince McMahon gave the cruiserweight division it's final dagger: He retired the Cruiserweight Championship.

Since this date, any cruiserweights—which was classified as anyone under 215 pounds—not named Rey Mysterio has been given no shot by the WWE. Basically, the cruiserweight division now serves as joberville.

Why don't we take a look at just a few examples of this:

Since the break up of the Hart Dynasty, Tyson Kidd has been doing absolutely nothing. This is despite the quite formidable team that him and Smith made, and afterwards, Kidd did a terrific job portraying his newly assigned heel gimmick.

And as most of us have seen, Kidd is better in the ring than current main eventers John Cena, The Miz and many others. That isn't to bash Cena or The Miz, because I have defended both, but it's the truth.

Evan Bourne debuted in the WWE on June 3, 2008, ironically on the three month anniversary of the Cruiserweight Championship's demise.

Since debuting, Bourne has had some good matches, but has done nothing past that. He has won no championships and doesn't even make regular appearances on Monday Night Raw.

The closest Bourne has had resembling to a main event push is merely being placed in a main event tag match, partnering with John Cena. And while he did win, he would soon be back to jobbing as usual.

Although I could pull many more, Chavo Guerrero will serve as my final example.

Unlike the others, Chavo had actually received airtime on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, his downfall would begin after being drafted to Raw in the 2009 WWE Supplemental Draft.

Soon after, Chavo would begin a long and humiliating feud with Hornswaggle.

These two would face off in numerous matches with silly stipulations, with Hornswaggle, standing at only 4'4, always emerging victorious.

Since this time, Chavo has rarely been spotted on either Raw or SmackDown, despite having shown all the tools in the past.

My Closing Rant

The cruiserweight division once gave the smaller guys a stage to shine. On a weekly basis, they would steal the show, being the only action of its sort on WWE Programming.

The division was the launching pad for now greats such as Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero, albeit in WCW.

If this continues, I believe we'll begin seeing smaller wrestlers choose places like Ring of Honor, instead of the WWE.

I don't know what makes Vince McMahon despise the thought of a cruiserweight division. However, I do know that his continued insistence to job cruiserweights has gone too far.

We not only are missing out on great matches, that the WWE lacks nowadays, but we could also be missing out on the next big star.
