WWE Politics: The Top Reasons Why Your Favorite Superstar May Never Get Pushed

Josh GMay 5, 2011

Whether you know it or not, WWE backstage is a breeding ground where greedy, selfish, and just plain dumbfounding people and decisions are made.

In this article, we'll take a look at the real reasons why your favorite superstars aren't being pushed or even given a chance at become a main event superstar.  There are many things that go on backstage.

First, let's take a look at what exactly backstage politics means.

Wreslting Politics: What Does It Mean?

Ever wonder why your favorite superstar never gets a push?  Ever wonder why a superstar you love gets released for no apparent reason?  Ever wonder why a superstar with all the talent in the world gets buried?  Well, I have two words for you:  Wrestling Politics.

Politics in the WWE have become a serious problem, especially over the past couple of years.  It has made future stars into jobbers, ruined careers, postponed much deserved title victories and caused multiple other issues.

WWE's Politicians are made up of the owner, Vince Mcmahon (who ultimately decides on what happens and how it happens), Management (guys like Kevin Dunn who bury guys just because they aren't a fan of them), and top superstars like Randy Orton and Triple H who are known to have backstage powers, even decide whether they want to lose a match to a certain superstar.

Isn't WWE supposed to be about what the fans want?  Why do Politics even have to exist in WWE?  They can say whatever they want to, but facts are facts.  WWE has a habit of making it about what top names and management thinks should happen.

Let's take a look at the top forms of Politics in WWE, using superstars who have fallen victim to them as an example.

Superstars Not Wanting to Lose

When you look at this form of Politics, one name comes to mind as being the biggest form of nuisance to newer superstars trying to make a name: Randy Orton

A prime example of him using his powers to get rid of another superstar is the Ken Kennedy controversy in 2009.  If you somehow don't remember, Ken Kennedy was a rising star who had turned face upon attacking William Regal on Raw.  Kennedy was injured during a house show and officially returned to Raw on May 25, 2009.  There he would be in a 10 man tag-team match, which his team would win.  This match would be his last in WWE, as just a few days later, he was released.

He was released after Randy Orton complained that Mr. Kennedy hurt him during the match, even though WWE's official claim was that Kennedy was still injured and they had decided to release him.  In response, Mr. Kennedy posted a video showing in fact he was not injured, and that Randy Orton (who Kennedy considered a friend) yelled at him after the match claiming he hurt him.

Obviously, Orton was never seriously injured as he claimed as he never took even a week off to heal.  Yet another example of Orton pushing around another superstar is his feud with Kofi Kingston.  Kingston and Orton had a series of great matches, but one match was all it took for Kingston to be ultimately dropped, simply because of one mistake.

Sure, Kingston has won a few mid-card titles since then, but when you look at his chances of becoming anything more than a mid-carder, it appears as though they have been all taken away.  Whenever he's put in a big match against a big name (such as Alberto Del Rio more recently) he loses.  CM Punk is a name that also comes to mind.  During his feud with Orton, he was completely buried, as he lost all three of their matches in a storyline that was literally meant to make Punk look good.

Punk may not be in as bad shape as Kennedy or Kingston, but three losses to Orton in a row is a big deal when talking about a superstar like Punk.  Exactly why does Orton (now an eight time world champion) need to bury other competition to make himself look even better?

Even more recently, we have Randy Orton's victory over Christian for the World Heavyweight Title on Smackdown.  Just two days after Christian won, it was taken away.  Before you say it's not Orton's fault, don't forget how much power he has.

Randy Orton is in such a high position in WWE that he has the power to say he doesn't need the title at the moment.  He could have said "Hey Vince, I don't need the title right now.  Christian deserves it more".  But no, Orton would rather put himself over some more.

This isn't a Randy Orton hate article, facts are facts.  Rey Mysterio is another guy who has been known to decided who he does or doesn't want to lose to.  Remember his feud with Dolph Ziggler?  Mysterio refused to drop the title to him, as he preferred John Morrison.

The Size of a Superstar

Think about the biggest names in WWE History.  Think about who has been a World Champion and who hasn't.  Think about how big guys like John Cena, Batista, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar and more are always going to be a big name at some point in their career.  With rare exceptions, it's always the big guys who get pushed over smaller ones.  You literally have to be 6'5" and 250 plus pounds to be guaranteed a World Title.

Why do you have to be so big to win a World Title?  If you look to the past, you'll see that smaller guys who were given the chance can do just as good, if not better, than bigger guys.  Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio and Bret Hart are a few names that come to mind.

I guarantee that if given the chance, smaller guys can do just as well.

Merchandice, Ability to Make Money, and Draw Crowds

When you look at WWE's merchandise for sale, it's full of guys like John Cena, Randy Orton, Undertaker, Edge, Rey Mysterio and Triple H.  A lot of people say the reason why smaller guy, or the people we want to see more of can't be pushed is because they can't sell anything or they don't draw crowds.  Huh?

First of all, how many of these guys actually have merchandise available for sale?  WWE  has finally made a Zach Ryder t-shirt and it's become one of the company's most popular items.  With how many people in the IWC talk about guys like Ryder, Christian and Morrison, among others, why not give them a chance to sell and see how popular they can be?  Not to mention how many signs you see for these guys or how good of a reaction they get.

How can you say they can't make money for the business or draw a crowd if they aren't even given a chance to?  Christian is very popular, people simply love him.  If WWE started making more merchandise for him and gave him longer World Title runs (longer than two days)  WWE would see that it's not always best to rely on the same big, generic, boring guys every week.

Management and the Creative Team

Management is a big reason why some superstars get de-pushed, buried, released and lose so often.  Many times, there isn't even a reason for it.  A few months back, it was reported that the reason Sheamus was being buried and given the losing streak he had was simply because Kevin Dunn wasn't a fan of him.  Exactly why should that effect someone's career?  Just because you don't like someone or aren't a fan of them doesn't mean they don't have potential.

Upon being put on Raw, Sheamus was immediately given a World Title push and he proved that he was worthy of it.  He was then thrown around in random feuds, and won King of The Ring.  He was then given a major losing streak, where he was buried by countless people.  Then he won the United States championship and was moved to Smackdown.  Even though he lost that title, it looks as though he is in a better position now.

Another big reason for them not pushing certain name sis their lack of faith towards them.  How can you say anything negative about someone until they are given a chance and fail?

The Creative Team's excuse is often that they "can't think of anything for them".  Wait a second, your a "Creative Team", and yet you can't come up with something?  I don't see how that makes any sense at all.  Put two guys together who aren't doing anything, give them some matches on Superstars and some on their own brand every now and them, instead of these other names who aren't going anywhere.  Give people a chance before you give up on them.

Confusion

To be quite frank, WWE is confused and lost as to why fans like guys like Zach Ryder, Christian, CM Punk, John Morrison and Daniel Bryan, along with quite a few others and to why the majority of us prefers these names over guys like John Cena, Randy Orton, Triple H and even The Miz.

The answer is pretty simple.  They are more entertaining.  They put the word "Entertainment" in WWE.  They don't just use the same six moves every match and bury their competition.  They are good at making themselves and their opponent look good.  They have everything the top guys are missing and more.

Sure, Vince's favorites do get lots of pop's and money, but does that necessarily mean they are more popular and should be shoved down our throats?  No, other names need to be given a chance to be just as good in Vince's eyes.  They already are in our eyes.  Shouldn't that be good enough, if WWE is all about the fans?

Hopefully Politics in WWE will end soon.  It's getting old quick, but who knows when it will stop.
