WWE Tough Enough: Did Rima Fakih Break or Reinforce Stereotypes

The Doctor Chris MuellerMay 9, 2011

WWE Tough Enough is in full swing now with close to half of the contestants having been sent home at this point.  The people who are hard workers are the ones who stand out, but some people have stood out and there seems to be no logic behind it.

I am talking about Miss USA Rima Fakih.  She made her first appearance with WWE at the Raw that would see Sheamus crowned King of the Ring.  She was the one who put the crown on his head and stood there basically not doing anything.

She showed interest in further involvement with WWE, so she was cast to be a part of the show Tough Enough which was revived this year.

She claims in all of her interviews that she is passionate about wanting to be a wrestler, but that passion never seemed to follow her into the ring.

Every week she would look less and less like she should be on the show at all.

Let's get one thing straight before continuing, I totally understand WWE's reasoning in putting her on the show.  She is beautiful, has some celebrity status outside the ring and she has natural charisma that helped her win Miss USA.

She continually said her goal was to smash the stereotypes that people have about beauty queens, and after she was eliminated said that she felt like she did that.  Did you Rima?

If she would have seen the same show I had, she would have seen herself not even able to do a somersault, something everyone with any kind of experience playing sports should know how to do.

Every week she looked worse and worse in the challenges because others were getting better and she was not.  Her elimination was the only one that happened without having a bottom three where the person being eliminated did not choose to go home.

I am sure WWE will continue a relationship with Rima, as she is a great ambassador and could prove useful in WWE's attempt at expanding into other media.

All this adds up to one inevitable conclusion, Rima Fakih not only failed to smash those stereotypes, but she reinforced them by showing she had little drive and no focus.

Editing can make someone look terrible when they are not, anyone in media knows that, but her performance justified her quick elimination.  Hopefully tonight we see some of the other tough enough members step up and really show something special.
