The Rock: Is His Return Begining to Hold Back the Future of the WWE?

Ryan FryeMay 4, 2011

The Rock's return to the WWE earlier this year was met with high expectations, especially in the IWC.

At first, The Rock, John Cena and The Miz had an epic War of Words, perhaps the best in the WWE in sometime. But that, in my opinion, was the downfall of the Rock's return.

You see, at WrestleMania 27 The Rock opened the show with a fifteen minute promo. Now keep in mind, that Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan was cut off the card due to time constraints. Those time constraints would have been non-existent if the WWE would focus more on present stars rather than the past stars.

Then to close the show, The Rock would do that as well. In a very predictable move, the Rock interfered in the WWE Championship Match between then champion; The Miz and the current face of the WWE; John Cena.

This trend continued on Monday Night Raw in Miami, Florida, when the WWE held a celebration for The Rock's birthday. Only this time, he ate up the first thirty minutes of the show, and had about twenty minutes at the end. And honestly, most of it was a change the channel type of boring.

Meanwhile, R-Truth and John Morrison had about five minutes, that resulted in Truth attacking Morrison. This feud could be good, but they must change it up. But because of The Rock, they couldn't do this.

Now, I could also complain about the thrown together tag team match, but I'd rather test the IWC's loyalness to it's newest golden boy; Zack Ryder.

Ryder has not been on Raw for months, apart from being in the background of The Rock's "party." However, he still has become an IWC favorite, due to his YouTube series Z! True Long Island Story.

The shows are usually about five minutes, and to me, more entertaining than The Rock's two Raw promos and backstage skits. His YouTube stuff is original and funny. So why not give him five minutes to do something similar?

Well, because we'd rather see a legend (and he is that) cut the same promo at the beginning and end of the show, not to mention the ridiculous backstage skits.

To be clear, I'm not bashing The Rock. The Rock is probably the best mic worker in WWE history. But at some point, they are compromising the company's future, for a nostalgia run. Yes, this is nothing but a nostalgia run with recycled material that was great in the 1990's, but is stale in 2011.

The Rock's promos have went from epic to stale and recycled. Basically, The Rock has become Cena-like. How you may ask?

Well, just listen to his promos, it's just catchphrase after catchphrase. As opposed to Cena, who is just downright corny. So why do we have the double standard of hating Cena and loving everything The Rock does?

If you think about it, there isn't a good reason for it. The Rock is squashing young talent to a further extent than Cena, because he is robbing them of air time. The sad thing about it is;The Rock could easily make a bigger impact in half the time that is he is currently seeing by showing up once a month.

My newest rant is now in the books.

So what do you think about The Rock's return now? Is he becoming stale and unoriginal, while squashing younger talent. Or he is just as appealing as you found him in the Attitude Era?

Feedback is welcome!
