WWE: The 10 Best Ladder Matches We've Never Had

Drake OzMay 3, 2011

After watching the classic bout between Alberto Del Rio and Christian at Extreme Rules on Sunday, my instant reaction was, "Wow, I love Ladder matches."

In fact, one of my favorite wrestling DVDs is The Ladder Match, which features some of the best matches you'll ever see, with guys like Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy and Shawn Michaels laying it all on the line just to entertain the fans.

But for every great ladder match we've ever seen, there are countless more that have never actually happened.

Maybe the cards never fell the right away, or maybe the wrestlers were from two different generations. Either way, we never got the privilege of witnessing what could have been incredible matches between two phenomenal WWE superstars.

So, let's take a trip to Dream Land, shall we?

Here's a look at the top 10 Ladder matches that we've never seen, but damn sure want to.

Note: I'm sticking with current or former WWE stars only. No one from TNA.

10. Rey Mysterio vs. Evan Bourne vs. Daniel Bryan

1 of 10

Of all the matches on this list, this is one of the few that is actually still feasible. It's also one that today's current WWE fans would love to see.

You've got arguably the best in-ring worker in the WWE (Daniel Bryan) and two of the most flashy (Evan Bourne and Rey Mysterio) competing in a Triple Threat Ladder match.

Sure, this match would be a spot-fest. But it would also be a damn good one because it features three guys who can flat out go in the ring and aren't afraid to hit those high-risk spots.

9. Dolph Ziggler vs. Shelton Benjamin

2 of 10

The (formerly) Platinum Blonde vs. the Gold Standard? I think so.

Shelton Benjamin has participated in about as many Ladder matches as anyone in WWE history, with four appearances in single or tag team Ladder matches and five appearances in the Money in the Bank match.

And oddly enough, he's stolen the show in just about every single one of them, too.

I've got him against the inexperienced Dolph Ziggler (only one Ladder match for his career) simply because Ziggler showed enough in that one match to make me believe he could put on a hell of a bout if given time.

8. Rob Van Dam vs. Edge

3 of 10

One of the most seasoned Ladder Match veterans in WWE history, Rob Van Dam competed in six Ladder matches while with the company, and that doesn't count the Money in the Bank match.

He's got about as much experience in these bouts as anybody.

And so does Edge, who's also competed in six one-on-one Ladder matches and is often in the conversation for the greatest Ladder match competitor of all time.

You know what? It really would be hard to argue against that.

7. Undertaker vs Razor Ramon

4 of 10

I know what some of you might be thinking: Why would I put this match on this list?

Hear me out.

Razor Ramon, a.k.a. Scott Hall, participated in two of the first three Ladder matches in WWE history. And not only were they two of the first, they were two of the best as well.

Ramon could put on a show in Ladder matches, and so could the Undertaker, who defeated Jeff Hardy in a Ladder match on July 1, 2002 that is widely considered to be one of the best in the history of wrestling.

So, now I pose a question to you: Why wouldn't this match work?

6. Eddie Guerrero vs. Alberto Del Rio

5 of 10

I know we've only seen two Ladder matches from Alberto Del Rio in the WWE, but I also know that I'm not the only one who's been impressed with what I've seen.

Del Rio put on a great showing on Sunday, and he would do the same against Eddie Guerrero.

Guerrero didn't participate in a ridiculous amount of Ladder matches in the WWE (four), but he did have two really good ones against Rob Van Dam and against Rey Mysterio.

With a bout against his fellow Mexican superstar, ADR, the hype isn't the only thing there—the match quality is, too.

5. Jeff Hardy vs. Christian

6 of 10

As many times as we saw Christian and Jeff Hardy face each other in those phenomenal Tag Team TLC matches, we never actually got to see them in a singles bout.

Really? Yeah, it surprised me, too.

Given the history between these two, though, I really wish we could have seen it. Who knows, maybe we will.

4. MITB: Jeff Hardy vs. Christian vs. Chris Jericho vs. Edge vs. HBK vs. Bret Hart

7 of 10

Just take a look at the star power in this match and try not to mark out.

I don't think I really need to write anything about this dream match, because if you've ever watched the WWE, then you know why it would be nothing short of awesome.

3. Shawn Michaels vs. Edge

8 of 10

In my book, Shawn Michaels and Edge are the two greatest Ladder match competitors in WWE history.

HBK competed in the first four Ladder matches we ever saw on WWE programming, and Edge revolutionized the match with his participation in those unforgettable TLC bouts.

If this match ever actually happened, is there any doubt that it would be fantastic?

2. Bret Hart vs. Chris Jericho

9 of 10

I think Canada would implode if this match actually happened—two of the country's most popular (and best) wrestlers of all time competing against each other is almost too much to handle.

Hart actually competed in the first Ladder match in WWE history against Shawn Michaels in 1992, and Jericho put on three classic Ladder matches in the WWE, including his bout against HBK at No Mercy in 2008 that ranks among my top five matches of all time.

If that doesn't convince you, then I'm sorry, but I can't really help you.

1. Shawn Michaels vs. John Morrison

10 of 10

For a while, the widespread chatter among members of the IWC was that John Morrison reminded them of a younger Shawn Michaels.

Well, with Morrison's jaw-dropping parkour style and his impressive history in Ladder matches, I feel the same way.

Imagine HBK, arguably the greatest Ladder match competitor of all time, going one-on-one with one of the best in-ring technicians currently in the WWE.

I smell a five-star bout.
