WWE Raw: Rock's B-Day, Cena's Victory, Kharma, Del Rio and More from Last Night

The Doctor Chris MuellerMay 3, 2011

Last night was the celebration of the Rock's Birthday on Raw.  We also got a little tribute to the US and our fight between 9/11 and now to find Osama bin Laden.

The night started off with videos of the devastation that took place during the 9/11 attacks, and we also saw videos from two days later when SmackDown went live as the first public gathering after the attack.

The Rock came out and started off the night by telling everyone how happy he was to be home in Florida. He went through the usual motions of hyping up the crowd, waiting for the chants to die down and hyping them back up again, as Rock is known to do.

The General Manager chimed in, and before Cole could read the email, Rock told him to come in the ring and read it to his face. After a bunch of grandstanding, Cole finally made his way to the ring and demanded an apology from Rocky for the years of humiliation.

Rock did apologize, but he followed it up with a Rock Bottom.

I have to stop here and say that I get why WWE held the birthday celebration. They were in Rock's hometown, and it was another way to keep him relevant in WWE while waiting for WrestleMania 28. That being said, I think they went overboard a little.

The first match was Miz cashing in his rematch clause to try to get back the WWE title he lost the night before. The match was back and forth, with both men getting in some great offense.

Riley played his role perfectly and interfered twice to try to get the win for his boss. The match would end when Miz hit Cena with the title behind the ref's back to score the three count.

The Miz's own wrongdoing ended up coming back to bite him, as the ref saw Miz had the title the whole time and reversed the decision to give Cena back the belt. This kind of result shows me that Cena and Miz are not done feuding yet.

We also got the TV debut of Kharma last night. The former TNA Knockouts champion interrupted a match between Kelly Kelly and Maryse. Kelly appeared stunned by the sheer terror she was feeling, and while she cowered in the corner, Kharma proceeded to give Maryse an implant buster.

I am not sure if WWE will use a different name for the finisher, but they may allow her to call it the implant buster if TNA did not trademark the name. I doubt it though; WWE wants everything to have a WWE identity, including the finishing moves wrestlers use.

A match I was surprised to enjoy as much as I did was Mason Ryan vs. Kane. It looks like WWE is going to push Ryan, soon as he was portrayed as almost unstoppable against the big red monster.

Ryan knocked Kane off his feet faster and more often than I can ever remember seeing. Ryan also took out Big Show with a massive spear. WWE is even giving him Batista's move set at this point.

Ryan is a big, intimidating guy who fits the WWE mold perfectly. If he keeps improving in the ring, the sky is the limit for the Nexus member to become champion.

Last night also saw a match between four of the drafted superstars from SmackDown. Rey and Kofi took on Drew McIntyre and Jack Swagger. The match was pretty good and had a lot of back-and-forth action. The win went to Rey after he hit the 619 on Drew.

Del Rio tried to attack Rey after the match but was thwarted by Mysterio's quickness.

Throughout the night the cameras would show the party being held for The Rock in the back of the arena. Various guests would appear from time to time. Santino pitched Rock a movie based on three of his previous movie characters. Khali even showed up in a tooth fairy outfit, which got a "DAMN" out of Ron Simmons.

It was nice to see WWE give a little throwback to the nation of domination by having Rock and Simmons on screen together. I miss those days when guys like Savio Vega and D-Lo Brown were stars.

John Cena eventually showed up at the party and told Rock he would have the WWE title when WrestleMania rolled around and that he would put it on the line. This could potentially be a good build up to this yearlong feud. If Rock keeps appearing on TV every month or two, then he could keep people's interest in the way off match.

Last night's Raw was an above-average show in my opinion, and that quite frankly had nothing to do with the Rock being there.

Mason Ryan showed he has potential, Kofi and Rey made an impression their first night on Raw, Cole got a Rock Bottom, Kharma keeps taking out the blondes of the Diva division and last but not least, Cena and Miz put on a great match.

What did you guys think of Raw last night?
