UFC 129 Fight Card: Georges St-Pierre vs Jake Shields Anything but Boring!

Leon HorneApr 30, 2011

Anyone tuning into UFC 129: St-Pierre vs Shields this Saturday night are in for a real treat. The main card consists of two title fights: Georges St-Pierre vs Jake Shields and Jose Aldo vs Mark Hominick. The rest of the main card is rounded out by Randy Couture vs Lyoto Machida, Vladamir Matyushenko vs Jason Brilz and Mark Bocek vs Ben Henderson.

55,000 people will be showing up at the Rogers Center for the UFC's and North America's largest attendance for a mixed martial arts event in history. Who knows what the pay per view numbers will be?

When one looks at the main card from top to bottom, there are some great matches, but some people may be worried about having to watch some snooze fests.

It's easy to see why some people are worried about seeing some boring fights.

In the past, people have complained about the number of decisions both St-Pierre and Shields have had, Couture is known for holding guys up against the cage, which, for some, can be boring, Machida's elusive style often results in lulls throughout a fight and Vladimir Matyushenko's middle name is "The Janitor".

Put those things aside and one really realizes the potential of this card.

St-Pierre vs Shields could be one of the most technical battles fans have seen in a long time. Both guys are studs on the ground, and although Shields maybe has weaker stand up than St-Pierre, he has only been knocked out or technically knocked out once early on in his career. St-Pierre and Shields want this fight badly, so expect them to leave it all on the line.

Randy Couture is possibly fighting his last fight against Machida. Expect him to leave nothing to chance, because he is going to want to go out on a good note. The fact that Machida is coming off of a two fight losing streak and has been on the losing end of a controversial decision against Quinton Jackson, he will probably be looking hard for the finish. Three losses in a row can spell bad things for a fighter in the UFC.

As for Matyushenko vs Brilz, both guys are good wrestlers that could very well nullify each other in the grappling aspect of the fight. Usually what happens when two guys nullify their strengths is they often end up fighting away from them, and when a wrestler is pitted against a wrestler, that usually means a slug fest.

Even if one or two of the aforementioned fights on the main card turn out to be a bit boring to some, the other fights on the main card and the under card will likely make up for it.

In the co-main event, Jose Aldo is defending his featherweight title against Canadian Mark Hominick. This fight has fight of the night written all over it. Between the two, they only have nine decisions over 39 fights.

Both guys love the stand up game, and both of them have the power to put people to sleep at any moment in a fight. Not much more has to be said about this one.

In a lightweight match-up, Ben Henderson makes his debut in the UFC. Henderson was part of an all out war trying to defend his title against Anthony Pettis and "The Kick". He wants to get back in the title hunt, so expect him to be just as active as he was against Pettis when fighting Mark Bocek tonight.

Bocek is a very high level grappler who has seven submission victories to his name in 12 fights, and four of those submissions came in his last five fights inside the octagon.

Fans can look forward to a finish in the Bocek vs Henderson fight no doubt.

That pretty much wraps up the main card, but the under card is chalk full of fighters who are great at putting on a show.

Daniel Roberts, Claude Patrick, Yves Jabouin, Rory MacDonald and Nate Diaz are just a few of some very exciting guys on the under card. Although the casual fans may not know who all the fighters on the under card really are, it doesn't change the fact that these guys are good at putting on a show.

The great thing about UFC 129 is that all the under card fights can be caught on either Spike TV or Facebook starting at 6:00, so it isn't just the fans with a ticket that get to see the preliminaries.

Even though some fans may bill some of the fights as potentially boring, all of the fights are great stylistic match ups that for most fight fans will probably lead to an appreciation of the sport even if there isn't always a spectacular finish.

This truly is a great weekend for mixed martial arts, and every fight on the UFC 129 card has potential to be exciting.  The fact that it is in front of 55,000 screaming fans will amp up the energy level even more.
