UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields—Aldo-Hominick a Potential Fight of the Night
While many MMA pundits see the Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields clash for the UFC welterweight championship as the fight everyone will tune in to see from Toronto for UFC 129, the co-main event that evening will be the clash all talk about come Sunday.
Featherweight champion Jose Aldo defends his title for the first time as a UFC fighter against Mark Hominick in a showcase sure to excite the fans, especially considering Hominick is from Canada.
Aldo, for those that have not yet seen him in action due to his fighting in the now defunct WEC, is a thrilling, fast-paced grappler that sports an 18-1 record, including 11 straight wins. He has toppled the likes of Urijah Faber, Mike Brown and The Ultimate Fighter winner Jonathan Brookins.
Hominick has a solid résumé as well and will have the backing of his country in his first shot at UFC gold. His 20-8 record includes five straight wins, two of which have come by way of TKO and another pair by submission.
For those that did not follow the WEC before it morphed with the UFC, the fighters were always moving 100 percent forward, never backing down, never taking rests and hardly ever going to the ground.
That is what these lighter weight classes bring to the show: fast-paced, in-your-face action that nearly always ends with a thrilling knockout or crazy submission.
I'm not saying GSP-Shields won't be an incredible battle, but much of that contest will be fought on the mat. Aldo and Hominick, on the other hand, are sure to go toe-to-toe and excite those 55,000-plus in attendance and the millions watching around the world.
