WWE WrestleMania 27 Results: 10 Things We Learned from Undertaker's Win

Robert AitkenJun 7, 2018

The Undertaker and Triple H put on one heck of a match at WrestleMania XXVII. On a card where there were few low points to speak of, The Game and The Deadman showed up to try and steal the show.

Since these two had already had a WrestleMania match 10 years ago and were both coming off of injuries, it was easy to think that this match might be disappointing. However, many wrestling fans were happy to see that this match exceeded expectations.

While many young guys in the back watched this and likely learned something, wrestling fans also learned a thing or two on Sunday. Here are 10 things that this match taught us.

Jim Ross Is Still Great

1 of 10

Sure, we all knew that Jim Ross was great already. However, Good Ol' JR was certainly out of practice and there were times where Ross did not speak when he normally might have spoke.

Ross may have been a little bit quiet compared to most times, but he did not skip a beat in this match. You got a feeling that nobody could or should call this match besides JR, and our prayers were rightfully answered.

The match was designed perfectly so that Ross did not need to describe everything. We knew what the story between these two were. We knew what they were fighting for.

Ross was able to act like a baseball play-by-play commentator at times by letting the action speak for itself. It was a simplistic approach by Ross but it was perfect for the moment.

This Was HHH's Best Mania Match

2 of 10

If this is the final WrestleMania match for The Game, it was one heck of a way to go out. You can look back on the career of Triple H and, prior to Sunday, could only complain about the lack of that one fanastic WrestleMania match.

This one was it. It also all but makes up for the horrid match against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 25 and easily blows past last year's match against Sheamus.

Speaking of Sheamus, it was around this time in the night that you knew for certain that Sheamus would not be defending his United States Championship against Daniel Bryan on the card. We would later find out that the match was the dark match this year, which ended in a no-contest and morphed into a battle royale that was won by The Great Khali.

Not only does that result upset me beyond words, but knowing that those two were bumped to the dark match after being advertised for weeks is disheartening. I could have done without The Rock hyping the crowd for 15 minutes if it meant seeing this match as the opening contest.

Scott Armstrong Is a Terrible Referee

3 of 10

Sorry, Scott Armstrong. I know that your brother is "Road Dogg" Jesse James and your father is "Bullet" Bob Armstrong, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. This does not earn you any favors, though.

I expect you to know the wrestling business and make sure to call this match realistically. In a match where the streak of The Undertaker is held under much scrutiny, any act that resists treating the match absolutely legitimately is irresponsible.

I get the feeling that Scott Armstrong brings shotty refereeing with him wherever he goes. There were a few instances in this match where, whether or not it was expected, there were shoulders hitting the floor and a pinfall was taking place.

In many of these situations, a count is begun, only to have the wrestler raise their shoulders up. Armstrong did not do this on a few occasions. While I understand how fragile the two men were, not treating these near falls seriously is just doing an injustice to the fans, yourself, the wrestlers, and the show as a whole.

Michael Cole Was Not Coming Back to Commentate

4 of 10

Before this match, we saw as a shocked Michael Cole learned that he had won his match against Jerry Lawler via disqualification. One would be hard pressed to believe that Cole would not return for multiple reasons. These reasons include: gloating to Lawler, kicking Jim Ross off the commentating table, and Cole rooting for The Miz in the main event.

Pretty early on in this match, the two men crashed into and destroyed Cole's Cole Mine at ringside. Without the cubicle, we all knew that we were spared from Michael Cole for the duration of the night.

Nobody Respects the Spanish Announce Table

5 of 10

It's hard to not feel bad for the Spanish announce team when their table seems to be a target whenever it is at ringside. This is especially the case when there is a hardcore-type match on the card.

I don't know where they went when the table was destroyed but I am thankful that I did not have to rely upon their commentary in the match.

I advise the Spanish announce team to steer clear of an actual ringside table at Extreme Rules. Something tells me that won't end well.

They Didn't Copy WM X-Seven

6 of 10

My biggest fear with this match was that the two were going to copy spots from their first encounter 10 years ago. After all, just because they didn't acknowledge it on WWE TV doesn't make it out of the memories of WWE.

In fact, it may have encouraged them to steal parts under the impression that most fans would never know about it.

Triple H and The Undertaker decided to keep things fresh and tell an entirely new story, which any wrestling fan can respect. They did not rest on their great match from a decade before.

HHH Loves His Sledgehammer

7 of 10

It was hard to not wonder where the sledgehammer was for most of the match. I'm under the impression that HHH does not feel right in a no-DQ match without the big hammer.

Hunter never got to use the thing, but I don't think he felt entirely complete until he pulled out his favorite weapon toward the end of the match.

Direct Head Chairshots Are Back?

8 of 10

I just spoke about the safety with chair shots directly to the head and how they were outlawed in WWE. While they have teased in past weeks and months with chairs in the vicinity of the head, there were no direct shots from a chair to a person's skull until this match.

It just adds one more feather to the cap in the "is WWE going away from TV-PG?" argument.

Newsflash, people. They aren't changing it up anywhere. It is simply just getting edgy again, and nothing more. The old-school wrestling that we all love and respect would often be categorized as TV-PG as well.

Consider this a renaissance.

Nobody Will Ever Defeat Taker at WrestleMania

I always believed that it should be a young guy to defeat The Undertaker if it had to be someone. However, in the past three years, Shawn Michaels and HHH failed to slay the daunting task of winning over The Last Outlaw at WrestleMania.

Considering the impact that these two have had on the business and HHH's spot in the booking process, these were likely the only chances for an actual defeat for The Undertaker.

If they couldn't do it, then nobody can or will do it. It's as simple as that.

One, If Not Both, Will Retire This Year

10 of 10

HHH has said that if he can't end the streak that he will "die trying." If this is The King of King's way of writing himself off, then it has been a great career for Hunter.

As for The Undertaker, his streak is now 19-0 and we all watched him hobble out of the ring tonight. Whether the injuries were legitimate for either, there shouldn't be much left in the tank. Most of it was left in that ring in the Georgia Dome.

While I imagine The Undertaker trying to make it an even 20-0 next year, I don't see much more of a use for Triple H as an active wrestler. He can go ahead and feud with The Undertaker or face main event wrestlers for title shots. Unless he is trying to help a young guy make a name for himself, he isn't being used the way that he should be used at the moment.

Game over, Hunter.
