Major League Baseball Really Is Better Than Sex (Well, Almost Anyway!)

Evan HaffnerApr 4, 2011

Can you relate?

Maybe not literally, but there are pros and cons for each.

If you're a single guy helping raise a two-year-old boy at home, the love life department can be a little too quiet.   A lot of single women are sometimes hesitant to get involved with someone with a child from a previous relationship.  I try to tell them that my son dosen't need a another mother, but his dad needs a new girlfriend!

Let's start with Spring Training.

Sure the games don't count, but what can be better than sitting outside in Florida, (or Arizona) and watching your favorite team?   Add in a beer and a hot dog, and you've got a lunch for champions.

Since most Spring Training games are played in the daytime, you can text your friends at work and gloat that you're hanging out at a ballgame while they're slaving away at a job they probably don't like.  If it's a sunny day, you've even gotten a jump start on your summer tan.  Tell them you're putting on more sunblock while they're putting on the heavy coat and gloves.

Sit back and notice how many other able-bodied men and women are at the game, too. Are they all independently wealthy or just living off their trust fund?

Even the food and ticket prices in Spring Training won't drain your wallet as much.  That's important if you're a fella paying child support and/or alimony.

The players are also more laid-back since the games don't count. And you might even get that autograph from your favorite player.

The there's Opening Day.

Of course, it's a nice cliche to say that everyone is even and has the same shot at the World Series as everyone else. But we all know that's a bunch of nonsense.  Try telling that to a Pirates fan who hasn't even had a winning season since 1992. At least the Penguins and Steelers have recently won Championships, so there's something to be happy about in Western PA.

In how many Major League cities will you be getting ready for the college football season by July 4th weekend?  Especially with the possibility of no pro football this fall, it might be pretty lonely and pretty boring in a lot of these places.

If you're a die-hard fan of a team that gets to the "Promised Land," is there anything sweeter?

How many Texas Rangers fans actually thought their team had a decent chance of beating the mighty Yankees last year (especially after the Game One meltdown where the Rangers blew a five run lead going into the seventh inning)?  Nevertheless, the Rangers won the ALCS. Although they lost to the Giants in five in the World Series, I don't think you'll find a Texas fan not excited about their year, and just as pumped for 2011.

It's hard to believe that a team like the Giants, with a storied history and a long roster of great players, hadn't won a world championship since leaving New York City eons ago.

Or how about more than one generation of Red Sox fans that grew up hearing about "the curse," and then winning not one, but two World Series crowns in 2004 and 2007.  I think I remember Sox GM Theo Epstein saying that the first championship was for "our fathers, and our fathers' fathers," but "this one in 2007 is for us!"

Better than sex?

No, not exactly, but quite fulfilling and wonderful, just the same.
