Mbappé's Rollercoaster Season 🎢

Is Cristiano Ronaldo capable of improving his performances from last season?

Sandeep ParekhSep 21, 2008

The "Ronaldo Show"; those who were fortunate enough to have had a ticket to at least one of the performances last season would have been treated to a spectacle. Sumptuous free kicks against Sporting Lisbon and Portsmouth were particular highlights, tailored through balls, and blistering pace. Oh, and who could forget the 42 goals he scored? The 42 goals which helped Manchester United win both the EPL and Champions League. All this culminated into him picking up the Barclays Golden Boot, Champions League MVP/Golden Boot and PFAPlayer of the Year (these are to name a few). Then we saw a side of him that did not deserve any accolade whatsoever. The farce which was the handling of a potential move to Real Madrid was a slap in the face for the Manchester United Management. He didn't have the courtesy to confirms his intentions, and was clearly aiming for Old Trafford to push him out as opposed to make a decision himself. United were smart in their approach, and did not get sucked into his mind games, and held out. Did he seriously think his could outdo Sir Alex on Psychology?!

Looking at the more "important" performance; In his first two games back, we have seen glimpses of what the Portuguese star is capable of. Darting runs, neat, intricate passes although he is not firing on all cylinders yet. As much as some people would hate to admit, he does have a presence about him. I actually didn't mind if Chelsea equalised and had gone onto win against Manchester United, I only wanted to see number 7 on the substitute board. What is fascinating is that other United fans wanted see the same number too. Ronaldo is seen as a beacon of entertainment. He is not your average EPLplayer, he cannot be classed into a band, he is unique is every way. Right from his warm up, his free kick stance, his tricks and run (which is rather comical at times!). Being capable of last season's performance is not an issue. To be realistic, I doubt he will score as many goals, although the impact will certainly be there. I know for a fact he will strive for a 110% in every game, I know he will strive to score and assist in as many goals he can, most of all he continue to boost he entertainment value. Why am I so sure I hear you say? In my opinion, this season is Ronaldo's last at Old Trafford. I was so sure he was going to go the Bernabau over the summer, I even left him out of my fantasy football team. He still has eyes for Madrid, who in turn have designs on him. Clearly wounded at not picking up the kid, they will be at it on all fours come next summer. It is in Ronaldo's interest to play as well as he can, and put in spectacular performances if he wants to secure a date with the Madrid board. If last season was the "Ronaldo show" then this season is surely the "After Party."
