EPL Double Trouble: Can the Wolves Beat Liverpool Again?

Phil ConstableJan 21, 2011

It’s been the worst year in living memory of Liverpool and the glory days of yesteryear appear to be nothing more than distant memories.

Roy Hodgson’s gone and Kenny Daliglish has continued where his predecessor left in struggling to pick up points.

It’s fair to say that there has never been a better time to play Liverpool; however, there hadn’t been a better time to play Liverpool than a month ago, when a struggling Wolves team walked into Anfield and not only beat Liverpool, but humiliated them when they needed three points more than ever.

Tomorrow we’ll get Round 2 of this clash and the home side have the chance to do the double over the reds for the first time in 61 years, and it’s safe to say you can’t see Wolves getting a better chance to down the Merseyside giants any time soon.

Liverpool will arrive at Molineux without talismanic captain Steven Gerrard, without Jamie Carragher and with a squad depleted of confidence and with only one win since the the two teams last met.

Is it really possible that Wolves will go into this game against Liverpool, one of the powerhouses of European football and one of the most dominant teams in footballing history, as favorites?

Undoubtedly, Liverpool fans will keep the faith and rely on King Kenny to deliver, but as we’ve seen in the past with Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer at Newcastle, the "messiah" theory hasn’t proven to be a particularly reliable method of sorting out your foibles.

Mick McCarthy will sense this panic from within the Liverpool camp and will no doubt try and exploit it in a similar way to which they did back in December. The home side could well include Adam Hammill, their star January signing from Barnsley, and will be on the attack to try and create a piece of history that Wolves fans will remember forever.

So can Wolves beat Liverpool? Let’s watch and find out.
