Texas 34, Ole Miss 27
It was all Longhorns to open Saturday's game.
Manning completed 13-of-19 passes for 171 yards, one touchdown and one interception to lead Texas to a 24-3 halftime lead.
Meanwhile, the Longhorns defense held Chambliss to 63 yards on 6-of-18 passing, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. It marked Chambliss' first multi-interception game as a Rebel.
Manning rushed for a touchdown in the first quarter to give Texas a 10-3 lead before the Longhorns scored twice more in the second. Manning connected with Ryan Wingo on a deep, 50-yard touchdown pass, and Michael Terry III rushed for a score before halftime.
Manning fumbled coming out of halftime, and Ole Miss defensive end Kam Franklin returned it for a touchdown. The Rebels added another score when Chambliss connected with Horatio Fields, cutting the deficit to 24-17.
On Ole Miss' first drive of the fourth quarter, Chambliss found Fields again for a 27-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 24-24, capping a 21-0 run against Texas.
Manning threw his second interception of the game, but Ole Miss failed to capitalize on the turnover. Manning bounced back with his second rushing touchdown of the game to put Texas back in front.
A blocked 58-yard field goal attempt by Ole Miss and a field goal from Texas extended the Longhorns' lead to 10 points late in the game.
Ole Miss added a field goal with 1:22 remaining in the fourth quarter and successfully recovered an onside kick to get the ball back and make a potentially game-winning drive.
Despite a late push from Chambliss, who delivered several impressive throws and found open receivers downfield, time eventually ran out on Ole Miss. Texas held on to secure the win in Austin, escaping after the Rebels' second-half surge threatened to complete the comeback.
Draft Stock Analysis
ESPN's Jordan Reid noted Oct. 9 that Chambliss has risen to a potential top-three quarterback pick in the first round after leading his team to one of three one-loss seasons in the SEC.
That would put Chambliss behind only Oklahoma State's Drew Mestemaker and Miami's Darian Mensah while placing him ahead of his Saturday rival, Manning (No. 5), as well as Notre Dame's CJ Carr and Oregon's Dante Moore.
"I've seen him play live multiple times now, and you just hold your breath every single time because he throws strike after strike," an NFC assistant general manager said, according to Reid. "He's smaller and won't be for everyone that has a need there, but he's one that makes you think really hard about making an exception to your normal rules in the draft room."
Chambliss' age, a second-year senior, and tendency to make reckless decisions in an attempt to make a highlight rather than take the easy option to secure a win, have drawn criticism this season.
Ole Miss' lone loss this season came against Florida in a lopsided 52-28 defeat in late September. The Rebels have also earned big wins over Missouri, LSU and Louisville.
Chambliss has yet to throw for fewer than 210 yards in a game, notching 14 touchdowns and 1,676 passing yards with just four interceptions heading into his matchup against Texas.
Meanwhile, Manning ranks as the No. 5 quarterback prospect, potentially pushing him into the early part of Day 2 of the draft, according to Reid.
As the nephew of former NFL stars Peyton and Eli Manning, Arch has faced constant pressure and criticism this season while leading Texas to a 4-2 record. Heading into Saturday's matchup, he had thrown for 1,295 yards and 11 touchdowns, with five interceptions.
"He'll always be graded on a different scale because of the name, but I think someone will fall in love with what he can be in a few years," an AFC scout said, according to Reid. "I don't think he's the best in the class, but his flashes in games are fascinating and a preview of what could happen down the road."
Manning's resume has been less impressive than Chambliss' this season, averaging 215 passing yards per game while recording three games with fewer than 200 yards.
In recent weeks, the senior's ceiling has come into question following back-to-back losses to unranked Oklahoma and Florida. However, he has also earned signature wins over No. 1 Ohio State and No. 14 Tennessee.
Both quarterbacks struggled at different points in the game, with Chambliss faltering in the first half and Manning facing trouble after the break. Chambliss threw a career-high three interceptions as a Rebel, while Manning committed three turnovers of his own, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.
Despite their struggles, Manning came out on top against the higher-ranked Ole Miss squad, showing poise in the closing minutes after the Rebels' 21-0 run. He led Texas on two scoring drives down the stretch to help secure the win.
Neither quarterback delivered a standout performance, and Manning's win is unlikely to shift the draft conversation in his favor over Chambliss, despite Texas coming out on top.
Ole Miss will host the Auburn Tigers at 12:45 p.m. ET next Saturday, while Texas will host the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. ET that same day.
