After Further Review... No

With the beginning of instant replay in what used to be the most pure game on the planet, i think its time to review this call by Bud Selig.

I know, I know, its only for home runs, but with the instating of instant replay in baseball, there's only more to follow.

Reading an article by Jayson Stark on espn.com, he said that replay should be extended from home run calls to fair or foul calls, traps or catches, correctly positioning baserunners after fan interference, and unbelievably, he says that it should be extended onto safe or out calls on the basepaths.

I personally can't even begin to imagine a world of baseball without blown calls. Baseball has had them for over a hundred years, and baseball still continues to be one of the most popular sports in the US, and maybe the most popular in the world next to soccer. By putting instant replay into baseball, the game will prolong already long games even longer.

Take the only use of instant replay so far for example.

Alex Rodriguez's home run call was disputed, and after review, the call stood. During the whole ordeal, the pitcher was ready to pitch to the next batter, A-Rod was already in the dugout without a helmet or batting gloves, getting a drink. So far, so good right?

Now imagine that the call was overturned. A-Rod has to put his helmet back on, batting gloves back on, warm up again, then go hit in an at bat that he already finished. Now this wouldn't only be annoying as the day is long, this would add six or seven minutes to the game time! Ridiculous.

Now one more time, I want you to imagine that all of these new plays that could be under review are instated. That would mean that every dang close play would be disputed, adding ten minutes or so per argument.

The average time per NL game is 2:47:20. Add two arguments a game to that and your looking at a three hour game. Every single night. This wouldn't just be taxing on the players and umpires, this would take fans out of the seats because, who has three hours to waste?

After further review... no.
