Newcastle United Linked With Cardiff Hitman Jay Bothroyd
So the latest player linked with Newcastle United this week is Cardiff forward Jay Bothroyd. Honestly I am split whether I would want him at United.
The 28-year-old is somewhat of a journeyman who has struggled to settle down anywhere in his career and is probably playing the best football of his career in Wales.
The similarities between Bothroyd and Andy Carroll worries me, both are big muscular forwards, good with the ball who like to run the channels.
He may offer a better partnership than Carroll and Shola Ameobi will, but I would prefer a small man upfront with our No. 9
Bothroyd's goal scoring ability has never been in question, but netting only once in 11 games for Blackburn and twice in 18 games for Charlton Athletic, the Premier League it has been a different story .
There is no question he is one of the hottest properties in the Championship this season, following 15 goals in 16 games so far—he only netted 13 goals all of last season.
An England call up has been awarded through form and luck (injuries to Rooney and others forcing Capello to look elsewhere.)
This has seen the striker come close to making history, as he will be Cardiff's first English international in the club's 111 year history.
But United must be wary; a prolific Championship scorer does not always equal goals in the Premier League.
Do Michael Chopra and David Nugent ring any bells?
Described by former boss Arsene Wenger as a "classy left-footed player with a strong body and fantastic technique."
Whilst current boss Dave Jones described him as "drift, he's got good ability, good pace."
But whilst his talent is clear, his temperament and motivation has been questioned—disrespecting Arsenal coach Don Howe and throwing his shirt down after being subbed in the Fa Youth Cup examples.
Also lashing out as players, like he did during his time at Blackburn, makes me wonder if he will enjoy the attractions Newcastle has to offer to much.
As good a manager as Chris Hughton is, he seems reluctant to criticise his players and another "bad boy" moving to Tyneside could be the last thing United need to upset a settled squad.
