Brian Ickler Victorious at Mansfield in Camping World East Series

Mary Jo BuchananAug 24, 2008

From the drop of the green flag at the speedway in Mansfield, Ohio, young Brian Ickler took command of the Camping World East series field and raced his way to victory lane.

The first caution occurred at lap two when three cars, driven by Jonathan Smith, Jason Cochran, and Ricky Carmichael, tussled together. All three were able to drive away, however, two finished the night in the back of the pack with only Carmichael salvaging a 13th place finish.

Points leader Matt Kobyluck brought out a caution as he went for a solo spin on lap 34.  Apparently his rear tire was flat, causing him to get turned around.  Fortunately, no harm was done and he was able to get pointed in the right direction.

Kobyluck did, however, have to pit for tires and fell back in the pack.  By the halfway mark, the determined four-time winner had worked his way back up to the 14th spot.

But the night belonged to Brian Ickler as he held the lead for the majority of the race.  Things did get exciting at the very end as he had to race Kobyluck, who had worked his way back up to the front for the final laps.

The top 10 finish is as follows:

1. Brian Ickler

2. Matt Kobyluck

3. Peyton Sellers

4. Jesus Hernandez

5. Craig Goess

6. Austin Dillon

7. Derek Thorn

8. Ricky Carmichael

9. Kyle Cattanach

10. Jeffrey Earnhardt

The birthday boy (Steve Park, who turned 41) finished in the 18th position.

With Kobyluck's second place finish, he not only continues to lead the points but builds up a bit of a cushion.  The Camping World East series next moves to New Hampshire International Speedway on Sept. 12 as the battle for the championship continues.
