Maryland Terrapins: Meet Testudo
Meet Testudo
Though many love and revere Testudo, those who don’t should vote for him anyway. Why? Well, as many have been quoted as saying: “He is so cute!”
Testudo has served as a mascot to the University of Maryland since 1932. Some think the name Testudo is Latin for protective shell. Others say it could be his scientific classification.
A shell and a smile—that’s all Testudo needs to lead Maryland to victory.
Testudo's Experience
In the 1950’s, Testudo led the Maryland Terrapins to two National Championships. Some say it was legendary Maryland coach Jim Tatum, but behind every great coach, there’s a greater turtle. No other turtle has led a team to even a conference title.
Testudo's Leadership Abilities
With the help of Testudo, Maryland University has seen 11 consensus All-American players and countless bowl appearances. With one rub of Testudo’s nose, Terrapin students have gone on to great achievements.
What Sets Testudo Apart From the Rest?
Some might say the mystery that comes from close to 80 years of silent leadership is what sets him apart. Others might say it’s the lucky nose that people have been rubbing for decades. But in the end, it all comes down to the shell—no other mascot has a shell, and it sets Testudo apart from the field.
Testudo's Campaign Promises
Testudo promises to run a clean campaign and say nothing negative about any of the other candidates. He challenges them all to do the same. He also promises one nose rub to anyone who votes for him.
Testudo: Slow and steady will win this race.
