WWE Bragging Rights Results: What’s Next for Wade Barrett?
Despite having Nexus member John Cena in his corner, Wade Barrett was unsuccessful in winning the WWE Championship from Randy Orton at Bragging Rights on Sunday. Barrett, technically, won the match, but did it via disqualification. Therefore, the championship was unable to change hands.
When Barrett spoke to Cena prior to the match, I was shocked. He stated that if he did not win, John Cena would be fired. Would Barrett have to win the WWE Championship? There was no way that they could legitimately get rid of John Cena without going back on their word and making the storyline lame.
After thinking about it for a few minutes, it became clear that there was a way out for Cena. All that Cena had to do was attack Barrett. In that scenario, Orton would be disqualified and lose, but still hold onto his championship.
Cena stood around for most of the match and failed to do anything to help Barrett. After Nexus came out to attack Orton, Cena began to clear out the rest of the faction.
Any of them touching Orton while the referee was conscious would mean the end of John Cena. Eventually, Cena became smart and realized how to prevent Barrett's championship win and still stay employed.
So now that the leader of Nexus has had his plans foiled on a technicality, what is next for Wade Barrett? Here are five questions posed after Sunday night.
Will Kane Help?
1 of 5
Perhaps the most puzzling question after the event stems from the Buried Alive Match between The Undertaker and Kane for the World Heavyweight Championship. As The Undertaker was close to putting away Kane and winning the match, Nexus came out in one of the big shockers of the night.
Their interference helped Kane recover and defeat his brother, retaining his championship in the process. Perhaps Kane owes Nexus a favor?
I also found it interesting that all active members of Nexus except John Cena (Barrett, David Otunga, Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel) came out. Wade had the match of his life coming up later on, yet thought it was fine to tire himself out already?
Does Barrett Get A Rematch?
2 of 5
Seeing as how Barrett was the No. 1 contender and that Orton retained via DQ, shouldn't Wade Barrett be entitled to a rematch?
We will never truly know how the match would have ended. Orton looked like he was about to finish Barrett off.
However, all that it would have taken was one counter and a count of three for Barrett to earn the victory on his own merit.
What Does Survivor Series Hold?
3 of 5
Barrett is the poster child for Survivor Series in less than four weeks. My belief has been that, with Cena as a part of the group, they will compete in a traditional Survivor Series match against a group of men from RAW.
Whether or not those other men will include Randy Orton (and the WWE Championship on the line in some way) remains to be seen. There is no arguing, though, that the numbers for Nexus are perfect for the Survivor Series format.
Unless Skip Sheffield is back from injury prior to the event or a new member of Nexus is brought in, Barrett will be occupied with his team's match.
What Will Nexus Do With Tag Titles?
4 of 5
In all of the madness of Bragging Rights, it goes out of memory that Nexus already claimed the first gold (or copper) in their group's history earlier in the night. An impromptu match with the tag team champions, Drew McIntyre and "Dashing" Cody Rhodes, saw David Otunga and John Cena become the new WWE Tag Team Champions.
However, we can all see that Cena does not get along well with Otunga. Wait, so John Cena doesn't get along with the partner for his tag team belts? Ask Shawn Michaels how that all goes.
Also, doesn't anyone else find it odd that, in Otunga's night of hosting RAW, the duo nearly won the tag team championships once before? In that first encounter, it was Otunga who left Cena hanging. On Sunday, it was Cena taking control and refusing to tag out of the match.
Initial thoughts also bring up the question of if the Freebird Rule will be used for these championships. This would be much like how the Spirit Squad held their tag team championships.
More recently, Lay-Cool has used the rule in their title defenses. Will it have to be Cena and Otunga or could any of the other three (four when Sheffield is healed) members of Nexus defend the belts?
Also, since Cena walked away with both belts, where were they when he was hanging out backstage or when he came out with Barrett for the main event?
What Backlash Will John Cena Feel?
5 of 5
Cena will certainly be feeling some sort of impact for his actions Sunday night. Wade Barrett believes that he could have become WWE Champion if not for Cena purposely disqualifying Randy Orton.
After the weeks of bullying that Cena has endured from Nexus, how much worse can it get? Cena will find that out on RAW.
